First, the question arises, What is considered 'the natural' in ayurveda and naturopathy. We will find a great difference in the definition of natural in the two systems.

Second difference lies in the therapeutic and clinic approach and line of treatment in the two systems. Third difference lies in the concept of detoxification and how it is carried out. Fourth difference is related with the concept of body mind medicine in both ayurveda and naturopathy.

May 19, 2007 18:26 - Herbal Remedies Do Work And Are Effective

Researchers from King's College London were found that traditional herbal remedies show 'real benefit'. They found these herbal remedies to be helpful in diabetes and cancer. Indian Curry leaf tree was found to be helpful in treating diabetes. However complementary medicine experts said full clinical trials would have to be carried out to confirm the treatments' benefits. The researchers examined Indian diabetes treatments, Ghanaian wound healing agents and cancer treatments used in China and Thailand.

These studies have asserted the benefits suggested by taditional use of herbal remedies.

Edzard Ernst, professor of complementary medicine at the Peninsula Medical School, Exeter, found extracts from the curry-leaf tree appeared to restrict the action of a digestive enzyme called pancreatic alpha-amylase which is involved in the breakdown of dietary starch to glucose.

A patient with diabetes does not produce enough insulin to cope with rapid rises in blood glucose levels. Slowing the rate of starch breakdown, by blocking alpha-amylase, can lead to a more even trickle of glucose into the bloodstream from the intestine. The researchers are now looking at which compound in the curry-leaf tree has this effect.

May 19, 2007 18:32 - Herbal Remedies Vs Conventional Modern Medicine

Herbal remedies sellers in Europe was fearful over the proposal of testing herbal remedies along the same lines as conventional modern medicine. Celebrities Sir Elton John and Sir Paul McCartney are backing protests against the proposal to subject herbal remedies to the same rigorous checks as pharmaceutical drugs.

These proposals if accepted, can harm the large wellness and supplements based industry that is mostly in urorganized form. These remedies are also not under the purview of FDA.

However, the proposed directive on traditional herbal medicines aims to standardise regulations across Europe should not be considered as a warning signal. In India, we have most of ayurvedic herbal remedies manufactured under good quality control and government regulation. Even after that people are using them more and more. Actually this step will be taken some day. It is in the benefit of herbal remedies. Because only after proper quality control, standardization and regulation, we can use the word herbal medicine with its legally and formally approved meaning in stead of herbal remedies.

So it might have some negative impact on herbal sellers who are running their business from home or herbal shops. But it is in the larger good of herbal remedies. The conclusion is there should be quality control, regulation and standardization. But herbal remedies could not be tested like conventional medicine because they can hundreds of phytochemicals that are made in the factory of nature to provide synergy in natural healing.

May 21, 2007 15:23 - Adverse Effects Associated With Herbal Remedies

Dan Hurley wrote the new book ''Natural Causes: Death, Lies and Politics in America's Vitamin and Herbal Supplement Industry'' (Broadway Books). This book is about the safety of health supplements including medicinal herbs and herbal remedies. He reported some cases where use of herbal supplements was associated with adverse reactions.

St. John's wort: 203 exposures, 25 adverse reactions, 79 visits to health care facilities, 36 medical outcomes ranging from minor to fatal.

Homeopathic products: 7,049 exposures, 178 adverse reactions, 564 health care visits, 267 medical outcomes.

Echinacea: 483 exposures, 33 adverse reactions, 55 health care visits, 32 medical outcomes.

Though these numbers are not high as compared to conventional modern medicine. More cases are associated with simple drugs like paracetamol or others. But the point of concern is that in the present condition, when this market is wholly unregulated and anyone can claim what one likes, this can harm the consumers as they might not be given appropriate information. So be careful in getting informed about herbs. Stay away by miraculous claims. Find more info here>>>

May 21, 2007 15:29 - Exercise Caution While Reading Claims Of Herbal Remedies

Exercise caution while you come across claims about safety and results that are not backed by either traditional uses or supported by clinical researches. Be wary of products making claims such as :

  • The herbal remedy is100% safe
  • Herbal remedies are safe because they are natural
  • This herbal medicine has no side effects
  • Chinese medicines will not interfere with the effects of any western medicine
  • You can avoid Chinese medicines interfering with other medicines if you take them an hour apart.

Be wary of any unlicensed medicine suggesting the consumer should stop taking, or change the dosage of, a prescribed medicine. The MHRA advise you not to follow such advice - you should always consult your doctor about making changes to your prescribed medication.

Japanese authorities have come a step forward. And now they have decided to regulate herbal remedies and herbal supplements like Food. It is a welcome sign all over the world as herbal remedies are gaining more popularity and are widely used.

The US dietary supplement industry can expect a larger piece of the Japanese pie, following an announcement that the Japanese government will work toward a reclassification of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other dietary supplements as foods instead of drugs. May 25, 2007 09:58 - Elderly People And Dietary And Herbal Supplements

As we grow old, our needs change a lot, our capacities to digest and tolerate various food and dietary and health supplments undergo some changes. We need more of supplments that help us remain free of certain conditions that plague the old age like arthritis, high cholesterol levels, hypertension, diabetes, cardiac disorders, stroke, cancer, parkinson's and alzheimer's disease to name a few.

The recent clinical studies showed that dietary supplements can treat nutritional deficiencies in the elderly, boost their immune systems, combat short-term memory loss, reduce risks of Alzheimer's, and improve seniors' overall health.

The first, conducted at Memorial University of Newfoundland, concluded that supplementation with moderate amounts of 18 vitamins, minerals, and trace elements improved short-term memory and overall cognitive abilities and strengthened immune system function in 86 elderly people treated over the course of one year. Then why not take these supplements in a natural form from herbal remedies and herbal supplements and fruits and vegetables.

May 25, 2007 10:05 - St. John's Wort Vs. Antidepressant Drugs

St. John's wort is one such herb that has been extensively researched for its beneficial effect in depression patiens. This has been found to exert comparable antidepressant effect against many standard conventional modern drugs. And at the same time, the intolerance, side effects, drug interactions and other such data have shown that it is far better than pharmaceutical drugs.

St. John's wort (SJW) was associated with fewer and milder side effects than the drug therapies, it was difficult to make direct comparisons due to the different forms in which data was presented. In 1999, British researchers from the University of Exeter undertook the first systematic comparison of safety data on St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L., Clusiaceae) and four antidepressant drugs (Stevinson et al., 1999). In compiling the article, they utilized data from meta-analyses and reviews from the Medline database, manufacturers' clinical trials, drug monitoring studies, and spontaneous adverse effect reporting schemes. Although St. John's wort (SJW) was associated with fewer and milder side effects than the drug therapies, it was difficult to make direct comparisons due to the different forms in which data was presented. The authors concluded that SJW is "at least as safe, or possibly more safe" than conventional drug therapies. However, there is still a need for safety data on potential herb-drug interactions.

May 26, 2007 19:27 - St John's Wort Was Found Effective In Depression In Three Different Dosages

St. John's wort is a very effective herbal remedy that has been extensively researched for its antidepressant effect. It has been found effective in three different dosage regimen.

25 double-blind clinical studies have established the efficacy of St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L., Clusiaceae) in treating mild-to-moderate depression. Swiss researchers attempted to determine the optimum dosage of hypericin, a constituent that is thought to play an important role in the plant's antidepressant activity (Lenoir et al., 1999).

Researchers compared the effect of three different concentrations of St. John's wort (SJW) in 348 depressed individuals over a six-week period. The study included the concentration used in clinical studies and commercial products (0.33 mg total hypericin per day), as well as extracts with lower and higher hypericin content. At the end of the trial, all three treatment groups demonstrated significant improvement, with no major differences between the groups. Researchers did not measure the effects of other potentially important compounds in the SJW extracts, such as hyperforin.

The overall response rate in this study was 62 to 68 percent, which is higher than the average 55 percent response rate the authors found in the 13 placebo-controlled studies they analyzed for their study.

May 26, 2007 19:33 - Kava is found Effective in Anxiety In a Meta-analysis of Clinical Trials

Kava or Piper methysticum is a herbal remedy that is more defamed than it deserves. This herb possesses great anti-anxiety effect that is comparable to drugs and further, it doesn't produce lethargy or weakness or sleepiness or poor concentration the next morning. Once again, the meta-analysis of previous clinical trials was done and Kava is found effective and safe to be used in anxiety.

To perform a meta-analysis, researchers select the best of available clinical trials, then review and combine the results, allowing them to draw conclusions with more confidence than would be possible from isolated studies. For a meta-analysis of trials on kava (Piper methysticum G. Forster., Piperaceae), researchers at the University of Exeter, UK, selected three out of 14 double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials (Pittler et al., 2000). Their results help confirm the validity of the individual kava studies: Compared with placebo, kava extract is an efficacious treatment for anxiety.

According to U.S statistics, around 17 percent of the population experiences anxiety disorders in any one year, and the lifetime prevalence is almost 25 percent. Conventional treatment involves benzodiazepine drugs, which can have serious side effects, including dependence, daytime drowsiness, and memory impairment, among others. Kava, on the other hand, has demonstrated a remarkable safety profile, with side effects of only 1.5 to 2.3 percent reported in studies of more than 3,000 patients.

May 27, 2007 19:27 - Harvard Medical School Begins Institute For Nontraditional Medicine

Dr. Vikrama of www.holistic-herbalist.com and www.ayurveda-textbooks.com has maintained right from the begining that herbal remedies will eventually turn and will be recognized as 'herbal medicine' all over the world. Though this perception has been negated by many of the individual saying that FDA requires that a good sum of fortune, say 800 million $ be spent for four phases of trials for 'anything' to be accepted as 'medicine'. Though this is true but this perception has started to change.

Harvard Medical School has come forward to start a new Institute for the study of nontraditional medicine like acupuncture, herbal remedies. Gradually over the period of several years or may be decades, herbal remedies will emerge in the new role of recognized herbal medicine.

The program, established with a $10 million gift from San Francisco philanthropist Bernard Osher and $2 million from the school, will work in conjunction with a similar one at the University of California at San Francisco. Associated Press, May 15, 2001.

May 27, 2007 19:38 - Unexplained Fatigue Can Be Solved With St. John's Wort

Many persons have felt the symptom of unexplained fatigue. Many times it is not associated with poor nutrition, lack of exercise and other common reasons for fatigue. Then it is natural to suspect unexplained fatigue to be related with masked depression. Fatigue is the early symptom of depression in some patients.

St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum L., Clusiaceae) has been shown to be effective in alleviating symptoms of tiredness and fatigue in depressed patients (Hübner et al., 1993). Researchers designed a small, uncontrolled, open pilot study to assess the effects of St. John’s wort in 20 people suffering from fatigue of unexplained origin, in order to formulate a hypothesis upon which future, controlled research in this area could be based (Stevinson et al., 1998).

The Researchers pointed out, "The possibility exists that the improvements in fatigue in this study are an indirect result of the specific effects of Hypericum on depression, with the perceived reduction in fatigue a consequence of the improvement in mood." They suggested that future research should focus on subjects reliably diagnosed as "non-depressed" in order to determine whether the herb has any direct effects on fatigue.
