July 3, 2007 17:11 - Sida Species Of Ayurvedic Herbal Remedies Are Granted For Herbal Research

Sida species of herbal remedies are greatly used in ayurvedic herbal medicine. Dr. Vikrama has maintained right from the begining that herbal research should start on the strong foundation of herbal home remedies or traditional herbal remedies. These resources can guide the research in the right direction. We will get results in two directions - either the traditional results will be validated as is the case in most conditions; and in some circumstances, we will be able to eradicate the false claims associated with many herbal home remedies.

The roots, leaves, stems and seeds of the Sida plant have been used in traditional medicine to treat bronchial asthma, cold and flu, chills, headache, nasal congestion, joint pain and wheezing. It is also effective as a diuretic, cardiac stimulant and in treatment of nervous disorders and urinary infections.

Grandma's time-tested herbal home remedies may soon stage a comeback, giving modern medicine a run for its money. Scientists at the Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute here have zeroed in on a family of medicinal herbs found in the Western Ghats to develop a range of nutraceuticals (dietary health supplements) for pre-natal care of pregnant women and the treatment of arthritis.

As many as five different species of the Sida plant will be screened for their medicinal properties under a three-year project to be launched by the institute shortly. Funded by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, the Rs.30-lakh project is expected to help the State claim a major stake in the burgeoning global market for nutraceuticals. Scientists drawn from the Ethnomedicine, Phytochemistry, Ethnopharmacology, Microbiology and Pharmacy groups at the institute will be involved in the project.

July 3, 2007 17:21 - Why Does The Market Of Herbal Remedies And Nutraceuticals Need Regulation Like Drugs? Herbal Remedies Should Be Accepted As Herbal Medicine.

Dr. Vikrama of www.holistic-herbalist.com and www.ayurveda-textbooks.com has maintained from the begining that herbal remedies should be treated like Herbal Medicine. However, this should not be totally along the lines of conventional drugs of modern medicine. The guidelines, regulation and research and clinical trials in Herbal Medicine should be in such a way that refines the already present wonderful resource traditional herbal remedies in almost all the cultures of world. Ayurveda and TCM of China are already such resources.

When this market remains unregulated, there will be chances of adulteration of drugs, or cheaper and bad quality herbs. There should be global consensus among people of medical and alternative medical practices for such changes in the scenario of herbal remedies. Many big and small manufacturer mix drugs in herbal remedies and the great sensational news in online and offline flashes is that herbal remedies are bad.. BAD..They are harmful...We can't get good and pure remedies...

OVERALL, HERBAL REMEDIES ARE DEFAMED BECAUSE OF FEW PERSONS OR COMPANIES INVOLVED IN MALPRACTICE.

According to the investigations conducted by the General of Health Debbie Chin herbal products imported from Asia tested positive for containing harmful drugs in erectile dysfunction and weight loss prescription medicines.

After routine investigations Medsafe identified five remedies that contained drugs which could be fatal to some individuals. Some contained sildenafil, the erectile dysfunction drug which could also interfere with some heart medications.

Medicines which are used to treat obese patients contained sibutramine which also increased blood pressure and heart rate in some people. It should be strictly avoided by patients with glaucoma, mental illness and those with severe liver or kidney problems. These drugs should not be used in combination with drugs used for migraine treatments and antidepressants.

July 6, 2007 17:34 - About Self Prescribed Vitamins And Herbal Remedies

I have maintained that there should be professionally, rather medically recognized courses or programs all over the world in the field of natural therapies or herbal remedies. In India, ayurvedic doctors undergo same entrance examination as the conventional medical doctors. The curriculum of ayurveda doctors is equally comprehensive and intensive. They spend five years of academic education and practicals and one year of internship to complete degree. Thereafter, they are registered at State and District levels for clinical practice.

Gradually the scene will change and traditional herbal remedies will get the recognition and reputation of Herbal Medicine all over the world. It will take its own time. Then there will be very little trobles like this news.

---

Herbal remedies, chinese medicinal preparartions and aromatherapy are used by more than 52.2% of the population, based on a survey conducted in 2004. Out of this, nearly 48.8% had wongly assumed that such products were independently tested by a concern such as the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

"This is in contrast to increasing reports of adverse effects from complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) and other problems seen predominantly overseas, such as contamination, adulteration, substitution, variable dosage, dubious quality control and inappropriate labelling. Doctors need to directly ask about the use of CAMs in a non-judgmental manner to better ascertain the risks of drug interactions and potential side effects," the researchers wrote in the Medical Journal of Australia (MJA).

Self prescribed vitamins and herbal remedies were amongst the products utilised frequently. It was closely followed by herbal medicines. One reason behind the observation could be due to insufficient audit of alternative treatment options by the TGA before marketing. A majority of the products were classified L on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, meaning that a specific product can be taken to be safe, without any further testing or audit.

Ayurvedic herbs and herbal remedies are a great resouce and heritage to the World that can be proved, tested and affirmed time and again. Sialogogue herbs are those herbs that act on the process of salivation. These herbs increase salivation in oral cavity.

Saliva is dominant in Kapha and Pitta. So Sialogogues are naturally dominant in Water and Fire elements. Herbs with sour and pungent taste are Sialogogues. Saliva secretion regulation is done by Autonomous nervous system. Sympathetic stimulation reduces the saliva and Parasympathetic stimulation increases the secretion of saliva. July 16, 2007 17:39 - St. John's Wort And France, How Can We Help Herbal Remedies And Some Concerns Raised By A Herbalist

There is recent news being played in France about the possibility of adverse drug interactions of St. John's Wort with some of the prescription drugs. I want to raise some questions before you all - the real consumers of herbal remedies and supplements.

FACT ONE: Herbal remedies are not regulated in many countries. There is no nearby possibility that herbal remedies could be regulated like drugs, not just like drugs, but like drugs. This would be a huge transition in understanding, and economics of pharma industry. WHO should take this initiative - Goverment or people? They could have taken this action instead of simply banning.

FACT TWO: Why ban herbs?? Because they are potent herbs that can have beneficial effects comparable to drugs. There are scores of clinical research studies that have proven time and again the comparable efficacy of St. John's Wort and lesser side effects and adverse effects, better tolerability, and cheaper price. CAN'T Federal Authorities play a role here and take initiative for a larger study as is usual for pharmacological drugs? CAN'T any pharma company come forward and take the with this herb and do some 'nice' clinical trials? It appears so ridiculous to see such bans for a natural, safer, effective antidepressant herb that has the potential in it to help millions of sufferes of depression worldwide.

St. John's wort banned in France

The French Ministry of Health has banned the sale of all foods and supplements containing St. John's wort. Officials are concerned that the herb will interact with prescription drugs in harmful ways. Speculation about these types of interactions has been given much play in the press lately. Natural Foods Merchandiser, August 2000.

July 16, 2007 17:56 - Bravo To Researcher Of Auckland, Newzealand For Wonderful Study of Herbal Remedies in Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Symptoms

Dr P. Rassumussen have this excellent research paper based on his professional experience of treating more than 500 patients at a medical detoxification unit in Auckland, New Zealand. The beauty of this research paper is that herbal remedies had been used in the management of benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms related to the benzodiazepine class of anxiolytic drugs (such as Valium®) are generally long-lasting and most often include anxiety, insomnia and irritability. Dizziness, headache, tinnitus, tremor, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal upset, and perceptual disturbances are also common.

The author, a phytotherapist and pharmacist, mentions 28 plants that are effectively used by the clinic for anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, antidepressant, and/or adaptogenic effects. Seven are singled out for detailed discussion: valerian (Valeriana officinalis L. Valerianaceae), kava (Piper methysticum G. Forster, Piperaceae), passionflower (Passiflora incarnata L. Passifloraceae), manuka (Leptospermum scoparium Forster & Forster f. Myrtaceae), St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L. Clusiaceae), ashwaganda (Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, Solanaceae), and schisandra (Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baillon, Schisandraceae).

Part of the author's rationale for using these plants is that some of them contain constituents shown to act as agonists at the central benzodiazepine receptors in a manner similar to the drugs themselves. Kava, Passiflora incarnata and P. coerulea, ashwaganda, Matricaria recutita L. Asteraceae, Scutellaria baiacalensis L. Lamiaceae, and manuka (a native New Zealand plant) are among the plants cited as having demonstrated benzodiazepine receptor agonist actions. Read more about herbal remedies and medicinal herbs. July 20, 2007 07:08 - Vitamin C and Its Role In Preventing And Shortening Common Cold

Vitamin C possesses beneficial effect on mucus membranes. Its deficiency can cause Scurvy and bleeding. And it is a fact that it is one of the vitamins that we commonly lack in our diet. The value of Vitamin C for preventing and treating Common Cold has been the subject of controversy for six decades.

Older studies have confirmed its role in preventing and/or shortening Common Cold. A new review of previous studies by Chochraine review found that Vitamin C was not good for preventing Cold. And taking it has little effect on the duration of Cold.

Here one exception has been noticed in this study - Individuals who are exposed to short period of extreme physical stress like runners, skiers, soldiers are benefited highly by Vitamin C.

Dr. Vikrama's Comment: This controversy had been there for six decades, that is, longer than the age of most of the readers of this blog. So the main point is that Vitamin C doesn't have any therapeutic effect like drugs (and you all know that it is not a drug!) but its benefits in Cold can't be put aside. So don't be overzealous to take Vitamin C daily in excessive of dosage just to prevent Cold. Take it in moderate dosage from a variety of sources - naturally from lemon, organge, amla and other fruits and some from supplements. This is balanced and healthy. And Let the controversy live and let us have all its benefits by taking it in a balanced and judicious way! Read more about herbal remedies and medicinal herbs. Find more info here>>>

July 20, 2007 07:23 - Herbal Remedies For Anxiety And Depression With Holistic Outlook

The natural depression and anxiety herbal remedies actually helps to treat the mechanisms in our bodies that cause depression and anxiety. Herbal remedy for depression and anxiety are natural, safe and effective and are non addictive and with little or no side effects.

Another note on the medical approach to treating depression and anxiety, and this is purely opinion mind you, of course there are others with different opinions, and this opinion does not count for every case or every physician or psychiatrist approach.

I believe that many doctors are not trained to look at holistic aspects of a depressed individuals life, or perhaps they do not know how to approach the subject without feeling that they may hurt the patients feelings or alienate them. They should always see what that persons eating habits are (ie do you eat a lot of sugar - sugar and blood sugar play a HUGE role in mood as they can completely rule your hormones, which in turns controls mood).

Does the patient get enough physical activity? Believe it or not, just fixing these two factors in ones life can make a much more dramatic difference in depression than ANY antidepressant drug alone. Relaxation or recreational activities? Balance in life?

Not only that, but for the times when just changing lifestyle and/or eating habits doesn’t cut it, there are natural remedies and herbs for treating anxiety and depression that really enhance mood and lift spirits, without dramatically altering body chemistry or causing unpleasant or dangerous side effects.

July 26, 2007 05:46 - HRT Is Not Found Safe For Long Term, Adopt Natural And Safe Herbal Remedies For Women Health In Menopausal Women!

The conclusion of this long term clinical study is that Hormone Replacement Therapy is useful only in Perimenopausal period and it can actually harm women if HRT is continued for longer times.

Morbidity results of the WISDOM trial of HRT have finally been published, five years after the study was halted early following the cessation of the WHI study. The data show that hormone-replacement therapy (HRT) increases cardiovascular and thromboembolic risk when started many years after menopause and are consistent with the findings of the WHI study, say Dr Madge R Vickers (former head, Medical Research Council, UK) and colleagues in the report, published online July 11, 2007, in BMJ.

According to the authors of the current study, the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) reported in 2002 that the harms of VTE, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and stroke associated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) outweighed benefits of fracture and colorectal cancer prevention, and the trial was prematurely terminated after 5.2 years of follow-up. However, subgroup analysis of the WHI indicated that women who started taking HRT closer to menopause tended to have reduced risk for coronary heart disease rather than increased risk as seen in older women more distant from menopause, but long-term use of HRT is no longer recommended to prevent chronic disease.

This is a report of the Women's International Study of Long Duration Oestrogen After Menopause (WISDOM) trial, begun in 1999 and terminated after 12 months of follow-up secondary to findings of the WHI, to examine effects of HRT on older women more distant from the start of menopause on cardiovascular events, thromboembolism, osteoporotic fractures, stroke, and cancers. Enrollment was limited to 26% of the original planned cohort (22,300 women for 10 years of follow-up planned), and data on 11.9 months of follow-up were available.

The Result Of Clinical Study in Women...

In older women more distant from menopause, use of combined HRT for 1 year is associated with higher risk for CVD and VTE.

In older women taking combined HRT for 1 year vs placebo, there were no significant differences in numbers of breast or other cancers, cerebrovascular events, fractures, or overall deaths

You can always opt for natural herbal herbal remedies for menopausal troubles. They are natural, safe and effective. Coupled with diet and exercise, you can hope for a healthy and long life.

July 26, 2007 05:55 - Exercise Can Reduce The Risk Of Breast Cancer!

A growing body of evidence suggests that being physically active reduces a woman's risk for developing breast cancer. To date, the mechanism for this reduction in risk remains unknown. One biologically plausible hypothesis that has been suggested is that exercise results in lower estrogen levels, and estrogens are strongly implicated in the etiology of breast cancer. In general, however, the levels of physical activity that have been observed to result in breast cancer risk reduction are unlikely to result in decreases in circulating estrogens.

Moreover, occupations that require more physical activity also have been associated with decreased breast cancer risk and are unlikely to result in a decrease in circulating estrogen concentrations. It is also now generally accepted that exercise interventions that lead to changes in circulating estrogens in premenopausal women must be accompanied by an energy deficit such that the energy expenditure of exercise is not matched by increased food intake. Thus, exercise itself is not viewed as a mechanism to modulate the central control of the reproductive axis and the ovarian output of estrogen.

To our knowledge, there are no data on the effects of exercise training, with or without weight loss, on estrogen metabolites in premenopausal women. Although the majority of breast cancers develop in women after menopause, the potential to impact risk factors earlier in life may have important implications for lifelong risk. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of moderate exercise training combined with calorie restriction on 2-OHE1, 16?-OHE1, and the ratio of 2/16. The exercise training and calorie-restriction program was designed so that the subjects would lose body weight and body fat and would increase aerobic capacity (VO2max).

July 28, 2007 21:59 - Natural Products Association, NPA, Launches Action Plan To Have Better Quality Control Of Chinese Raw Herbal Remedies

The Natural Products Association is the nation's largest and oldest non-profit organization dedicated to the natural products industry. The association represents nearly 10,000 retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors of natural products, including foods, dietary supplements, and health/beauty aids. NPA or Natural Products Association in USA announced a new program for testing Chinese raw herbal remedies for their quality control - purity and composition. This program will enhance quality control of raw herbal remedies from China. It is more important as China is a major player for raw herbs.

"Dietary supplements are safe today, and this will help make them even safer. This program is an innovative response to a growing challenge in the global food supply chain how to make sure what reaches the shelf is safe, high-quality, and what it claims to be," said David Seckman, executive director and CEO of the Natural Products Association. "By testing raw materials in China, we're adding another layer of consumer protection to a process that has delivered good health products to Americans for generations. We're very pleased to announce that U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) will be testing the raw material for us." USP is a private, nonprofit organization that sets standards for drugs, over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements, and food additives in the United States and in many other countries, working collaboratively with local governments.

Under the new program, raw materials used in the most common dietary supplements will be tested in USP's Shanghai, China laboratory. This represents a significant departure from the current process where U.S. companies must rely on a test by Chinese laboratories or test samples themselves in the United States. This would offer several benefits, including: reduced transit times and costs; greater traceability and documentation of ingredients used in the supply chain; use of state- of-the-art technology in testing; and a systematic approach to verification.

Natural Products Association officials will provide test results to member companies and subscribers and build a database on raw materials suppliers, which will be made available to U.S. manufacturers to inform contracting and supply-chain decisions. Chinese suppliers submitting ingredients to the program will gain access to new customers, build reputations as reliable business partners, and potentially gain a market edge by differentiating themselves from competitors.

July 31, 2007 17:11 - Herbal Remedies Or Herbal Medicine

Herbal Remedies As Herbal Medicine: The term Herbal Medicine is used very hesitatingly in Western world. This is partly due to the legal status of herbal remedies as dietary and food supplements. And some of the powerful herbs that affect our bodies strongly, like drugs, or have some drug interactions are banned rather than followed with further research.

This scene will definitely change as more and more people are using herbal remedies in a great way and herbs are the leaders of wellness revolution. Passionflower, Kava, Ashwangandha and Valerian are some of the great herbal remedies for anxiety. St. John's Wort is comparable to drugs for its beneficial effects in depression. The most common benefits of herbs are cheaper price, natural, few or none side effects and comparable benefit. Gradually herbal remedies will emerge as herbal medicine and will get proper recognition and legal acceptance.

July 31, 2007 17:15 - The Present Condition Of Dietary And Herbal Supplements Market In US

Consumer interest in health and self-care has been identified as providing the impetus for the expanded market of a wide range of products that includes dietary supplements (Prevention Magazine, 2001).

In 2002, sales of dietary supplements increased to an estimated $18.7 billion per year, with herbs/botanical supplements accounting for an estimated $4.3 billion in sales (NBJ's Annual, 2003).

Vitamin and mineral supplement use by the U.S. population has been a growing trend since the 1970s (Bender et al., 1992; Subar and Block, 1990), suggesting that Americans are becoming more receptive to alternatives to conventional food sources for nutritional health benefits (ADA, 2000).
