Ashwagandha
Immunity Boosting Herbal Remedy
Ashwagandha or Withania somnifera enhances our
immunity. Enhanced Immunity safeguards us against various diseases and
infections.
Strengthening of immunity is done in various ways - by promoting the bodily
defense mechanisms like increasing the White blood cells count.
Improving Immune Function:
Bodily defense mechanisms are promoted so that we
are in better state to fight away various infections and to cope with the stress
of other disorders.
Clinical studies clearly demonstrate the immunomodulatory activity in winter
cherry based on hematological and serological findings. Hemoglobin
concentration, TLC or Total Leukocyte Count and WBC or White Blood Cells Count
was found to be increased. Sitoindosides in WS promotes phagocytosis or the
process of eating pathogens and foreign bodies by white blood cells.
Ashwagandha Boosting Immunity Through Macrophages:
Methanolic extract of Withania somnifera root was investigated for its
immunostimulant effect on Nitric oxide (NO) production in J774 macrophages. Aswgandha caused dose dependent rise in nitric oxide production.
Western blot
analysis additionally confirmed that WS increased inducible NOS protein
stimulation in a concentration dependent manner. It was inferred that induced
NOS protein stimulation by WS might be at the level of protein transcription
level.
Induction of nitric oxide production in macrophages explains the immune
boosting effect of WS. It might be one of the many ways how WS benefits our
system. (Esposito G, Iuvone T, Life Sci. 2003 Feb. 21:72(14) 1617-25)
Ashwagandha Enhancing Immunity:
Immunopotentiation on oral feeding of standardized aqueous extract of Withania
somnifera (Linn. Dunal, Family Solanaceae) was evaluated in laboratory animals
immunized with DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus) vaccine.
Immunized animals were treated with Withania somnifera extract and compared with
another non-treated group by exposing both groups to Bordetella pertusis strains
(responsible for Diphtheria). Results showed significant increase in antibody titres as compared to untreated group.
This research opens new portals for research in Immuno-Chemical industry for
such immune potentiating agent.
Ashwagandha Stimulating Immunity In Mice:
Another study from Amala Cancer Research Center, India, suggested that
administration of
an extract from the powdered root of the plant Withania somnifera was found to
stimulate immunological activity in Babl/c mice.
Immuno-modulatory Effect Of Ashwagandha:
Aggarwal et al studied immunomodulatory activity of Ashwagandha extract in
experimental immune inflammation.
A protective effect in cyclophosphamide-induced myelosuppression was observed in
animals treated WS extract, revealing a significant increase in white
blood cell counts and platelet counts.
Cyclophosphamide-induced
immunosuppression was counteracted by treatment with WS2, revealing significant
increase in hemagglutinating antibody responses and hemolytic antibody responses
towards sheep red blood cells.

Ashwagandha Useful In Aging & Copper Induced Conditions:
Ashwagandha was investigated for copper induced lipid peroxidation and
anti-oxidant enzymes in Wistar rats. Glutathione peroxidase GPx activity usually
decreases in the spinal cord as the rat becomes aged. Ashwagandha treatment
restored GPx activity and inhibited lipid peroxidation in dose dependent manner.
Copper induced lipid peroxidation and oxidative protein modification were
inhibited by Withania somnifera. These benefits are similar to those induced by Superoxide dismutase and mannitol. So it was concluded that Ashwagandha might
have role in aging and copper induced physiological or pathological conditions.

Ashwagandha Helping In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:
This study reported the effect of
natural and synthetic antioxidants in a mouse model of chronic fatigue syndrome.
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is an illness characterized by persistent and
relapsing fatigue, often accompanied by numerous symptoms involving various body
systems.
The etiology of CFS remains unclear; however, a number of studies have shown
that oxidative stress may be involved in its
pathogenesis.
Co-administration of antioxidants carvedilol, melatonin, W. somnifera, quercetin
or St. John's wort significantly reduced lipid peroxidation and restored the GSH
levels decreased by chronic swimming in mice. Further, the treatment increased
levels of SOD in the forebrain and of catalase. The findings strongly suggest
that oxidative stress plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of CFS and
that antioxidants could be useful in the treatment of CFS.
