Ayurveda Body Type (2)
Heart, Metabolism & Digestive Power
Ayurvedic medicine emphasizes the study of
Ayurveda body types. The Internal Medicine of Ayurveda asserts the dependence of
life on heart, metabolism and the power to execute the metabolic processes.
Both Anabolic or constructive processes and catabolic or degenerative processes
are in balance in our body to help us remain healthy and disease free. Know more
about them.
'Kaya' Meaning Heart:
Our heart beats every second. With each beat there is some sound resulting
from closure of heart valves and blood flow in the arteries. Usually heart beats
70 times a minute and it sends oxygenated blood received from both lungs to body
via arteries from left ventricle. This fresh oxygenated blood goes to our
tissues and cells through capillaries and it is returned back to heart via veins
and goes to right ventricle to be again oxygenated in lungs.
Heart beat is an important sign of life. Ayurveda places great importance on
heart as the seat of Ojus, Prana, Avalamabaka Kapha and Sadhaka Pitta. Healthy
heart truly signifies good health.
'Kaya' Meaning Metabolic Activities In Ayurveda Body Type:
We eat food and it is digested in stomach and intestine with the help of
intestinal juices, bile and pancreatic juice. From there it is absorbed in
lymphatics and blood capillaries. Then it goes to liver and all the other tissues.
The absorbed food is assimilated in our tissues and cells. It performs
several functions - provides energy for body functioning, repair of damaged
parts, growth and development of new parts. Later the waste materials are
excreted from our body via stool, urine, breathing and sweating.
All of the bio-chemical energy transformations or process in our body are
summarized under Metabolism or Metabolic activities. Metabolism is the sum of
all physical and chemical changes that take place within our body; all the
energy and material transformations that occur within living cells. It includes
material changes, i.e. changes undergone by substances during all periods of
life (growth, maturity and senescence or old age) and energy changes i.e. all
transformations of chemical energy of food stuffs to mechanical energy or heat.
Metabolism includes two fundamental processes: anabolism or assimilation or
building-up processes and catabolism or disintegration or tearing down
processes. Anabolism is the conversion of ingested substances into the
constituents of tissues or cells or protoplasm. Catabolism is the breakdown of
substances into simpler substances or the end products that are usually
excreted.
The word 'Kaya' that is used in ayurveda body type stands for all the metabolic processes.
This word signifies basically the anabolic processes.
'Sharira' Or Body signifying Catabolism Or Catabolic Processes In Ayurveda
Body Type:
'Shirayate iti Shariram'.
The word 'Sharira' is also used for the body in Ayurveda and Sanskrit
language. That which disintegrates with passing time or which decays with
time is body. Clearly the anabolism or anabolic processes of our body are
focused.
That is why we should always be careful about our body and its health.
'Kaya' Standing For Digestive Fire In Ayurveda Body Type:
All the food material is the fuel for the digestive power within our body.
The digestive fire increases when it meets its fuel or food. All the metabolic
activities are dependent on digestive power. They depend on digestion and later
absorption of food.
The nutrition of Ojus, tissues, strength and complexion is dependent on the
action of digestive power in our body. (Charaka Samhita, Disease Management
Section, 15/5)
Our strength, health, life and vitality depend on digestive power.
(Charaka Samhita, Disease Management Section, 15/3)
The extinguished digestive fire signifies death, the balance of digestive
power keeps one healthy for long time, the imbalance causes disease, so rightly
it is the base of life. (Charaka Samhita, Disease Management Section, 15/4)
Ayurvedic Internal Medicine considers it heavily for the maintenance of
health and management of disease. We as ayurveda physician try to maintain the
digestive ability to normalcy. Because most of the diseases favorably respond to
this strategy itself. Definitely it is merely an important consideration of
Ayurvedic Medicine, more holistic efforts are needed to eradicate the disease.
