Ayurveda Body Type (3)
13 Digestive Powers For Metabolism
Ayurveda body types are also based on
differentiated forms of digestive powers. These are the basis of metabolism or
the complete life processes in us. Ayurvedic medicine describes the metabolism
in a very specialized way for all the tissue layers and five basic elements.
We will be familiar with various terms synonyms used in Ayurvedic medicine
for describing body.
Differentiated Forms Of Fire Element For Ayurveda Body Type:
The digestive power or fire is not just an arbitrary word used in describing
ayurveda body type.
If we limit our understanding to simply the digestive power, we will be with
restricted tools to deal with metabolic disorders arising from various tissues
and other diseases in various body organs and systems.
This digestive fire element is present in body in three basic forms and these
three forms are further specialized into thirteen forms.
'Jatharagni' or Primal Digestive Power In Ayurveda Body Type:
This is the principal form of digestive power. All the other digestive powers
are supported by this. These increase or decrease accordingly. (Charka Samhita,
Disease Management Section, 15/39)
This digestive power resides in between large colon and stomach in the form
of 'Pachaka or digestive Pitta'. This digests all kinds of food and help in
absorption of digested food and divides food into doshas or humors, urine,
stool, plasma after digestion. (Sushruta Samhita, Sutra Section, 21/10)
'Dhatavagni' Or Digestive Powers Residing In Tissues In Ayurveda Body Type:
There are seven basic types of tissues in our body - plasma, blood, muscles,
fat, bones, marrow and nerves, semen or ovum plus menstrual fluid.
When digested food is absorbed and reaches plasma. Then, in the different
tissue layers or membranes it is digested to form the essence of that tissue and
corresponding waste material to be excreted. Each tissue has its own digestive
system, so to say, that maintains the anabolism and catabolism or metabolism of
that tissue.
This specific power of these seven tissues is called 'Dhatavagni' or
Digestive power residing in tissues. All these digestive powers of tissues are
supported by primary digestive power.
'Bhutagni' Or Digestive Powers Of Five Elements In Ayurveda Body Type:
There are five basic elements in nature - ether, air, fire, water and earth.
These are not the exact physical representatives. To understand their true
nature we have to delve deep in Yogic realizations and that would be off theme
now.
All these five basic elements like the seven tissues have their corresponding
digestive fires.
So finally there are these thirteen digestive powers - one Primary, seven
tissue dependent, five elements dependent.
