Ayurveda Body Type (1)
Body Mind Soul Triad
Ayurvedic Medicine describes uniquely
ayurveda body types. We can start it right from the etymological derivations of
Sanskrit word and go deeply in philosophical and physiological integrity of the
subject.
'Kaya' or 'Sharira' are the commonly used word for our physical form in
ayurvedic medicine. The beauty of the words are their referencing the integrity
of body-mind-soul triad. How diet or what we eat might affect our body and mind
is explored.
Etymology of 'Kaya' or Body:
Previous to understand ayurveda body type it is necessary to gain
understanding of body. Sanskrit language glorifies every word by having its etymology. We can get to
the roots, suffix and prefix of every word to know exactly what is the meaning
and tone of the particular word.
'Kaya' or 'Kay' is used for the body. This word has two definitions.
(1) 'Kayati Shabdayate iti Kayah' is derivation. 'Kai shabade' is the root. 'Acha'
is the suffix. 'ai' is changed to 'aya' and thus we get this word. So body means
that which produces sound.
(2) 'Chiyate annadibhirati iti kayah' is the derivation. 'chin chiyane' is
the root. 'Niwas chiti' is the formula and 'ghan' is the suffix and 'cha' is
turned to 'ka'. So we get 'kaya'. This definition of body describes it as one
that gets nutrition through the food.
OK, I do agree that you don't understand these meanings and this language. You
are not alone, I am with you in this line. We need to extend some patience
sometimes to gain something. Still appreciate the beauty and construction of the
language.
'Kaya' Meaning Body - Integrity Of Body & Mind:
According to first derivation of 'Kaya', we get it equivalent to mind. Yes,
sound is originated in mind.
What is sound?
It is the sensation perceived by ear. It is of two types. First the sound of
vowels and consonants. We need some listening and speaking practice to
understand and speak them. The second one is the sound that we can make or the
sound that is heard - all the other sounds - traffic, river, birds, music etc.
How The Sound Is Produced At First?
Mind desires to pronounce the sound of vowels and consonants that are heard
and stored in our memory. Then mind stimulates the bodily fire element.
Fire
element inspired by Udana Vata (one of the five main forms Of Ayurveda Vata humor)
tracks the thorax and lower and upper respiratory passage and strikes throat,
palate and tongue etc. and this striking of Udana Vata produces the sound.
So we see clearly that mind is really behind the scene, operating and
inspiring the whole business in the production of sound.
The word 'Kaya' referring to ayurveda body type is also strengthened by the fact that when
one of the propounders of Ayurveda, Sushruta, described the psycho-somatic
nature of men, he used the word 'kaya' as the suffix after the names of
psycho-somatic nature while describing ayurveda body type. The total of sixteen types of psycho-somatic natures are
described.
Body-Mind Integrity & Our Diet:
Ayurveda maintains the integrity and interdependence of body and mind. This
is not any new concept or new age medicine concept in Ayurveda.
The nutritious food that is beneficial for our body is also beneficial for
our mind. Sweet tasting food are described as pleasing to all the six senses -
five senses of cognition and mind. Sour taste like lemon is good for the
dullness of mind.
As food provides nutrition to our tissues, likewise it delivers nutrition to
our brain and mind. Now Brain foods are quite a fad. Further description of
effects of food on the three attributes of mind - Satva, Rajas and Tamas is well
recognized.
When we get or even imagine tasty, delicious and fragrant food of our liking
we can sense the condition of our mind. WAH!
Ayurveda describes that on eating food that is of our liking we get some
benefits like mental satisfaction or bodily satiety, health, longevity, strength
and interest. (Charaka Samhita, Disease Management Section, 30/333)
Food is the life of living being. Our voice, complexion, health,
intelligence, happiness, satisfaction, nutrition, strength and wisdom are
dependent of proper food. (Charaka Samhita, Sutra Section, 27/351-52)
The five sensations of sound, touch, vision, taste and smell and five sensory
organs gain their nutrition from food. (Charaka Samhita, Disease Management
Section, 15/12)
We use herbs with hot active principles to help in regaining the
consciousness in syncope or loss of consciousness. The memory
herbs or memory enhancing and intelligence promoting herbs are mentioned in
Ayurveda and proved by clinical research trials.
The sacred text 'Bhagavada Gita' also mentions the different liking of food in
persons with three psychological attributes.
Another Vedic scripture, 'Chhandogyaupnishada', describes the digestion of
food. There is threefold digestion of food. The gross part forms the stool and
urine. The less grosser part provides nutrition to tissues and build them.
The subtle part provides nutrition to brain, nerves and mind.
This description is essential to understand ayurveda body type because
ayurveda body type is described along these lines. The concept of Ayurveda body
type is further extrapolated based on digestive fires, elements and psychology.
