Ayurveda Doshas
Psychological Humors & Our Behavior
Ayurveda doshas play multiple roles out of
all the basic materials of body - they are humors when they vitiate the tissues, they are restoring the tissues
when functioning normally and in their deranged form they have to be expelled
out of body like waste excretory materials.
Vitiated and abnormally increased Doshas are expelled out of body through
Panchakarma procedures. So humors are greatly important for maintaining
health and keeping away disease.
Sensing the importance of humors for health and disease, Ayurvedists
mentioned Doshas as 'three pillars of body'. Bodily humors are the supporting
cause for body.
The Psychological Humors:
There are three basic attributes of nature according to Ayurveda and Vedic
Science. These are Satva, Rajas and Tamas. More introduction can be had here>>>
Satva attribute is pure in nature and can't affect the mind adversely. So it
is not considered as psychological humor. Rajas and Tamas are the two
psychological humors that can vitiate our mind when they are predominant and out
of balance.
Charaka mentioned that soul is bound to rebirth. Rebirth of soul can stop in
the condition when our mind is free from the effects of Rajas and Tamas
absolutely and when all the impressions of past actions are distinguished. This
is the perfect state of liberation of Consciousness. (Charaka Samhita, Sharira
Section, 1/141)
Some Afflictions Born Of Psychological Ayurveda Doshas:
- Uncontrolled sexual drive or desire.
- Anger.
- Greed.
- Ignorance.
- Jealousy.
- Ego, Proud.
- Grief and Sorrow.
- Fear.
- Extreme Excitement or aggression.
- Guilt or Apprehension.
Two Types Of Actions:
According to Ayurveda, there is two types of action at any given time.
Firstly Previous Actions and their resulting impressions are there. Second is
the free choice governed actions that we can do at present.
There is influence of both set of actions on us. When previous actions and
their impressions dominate that is luck. Luck is considered as a force in itself
that can affect us adversely or favorably.
At all times we have free choice of taking the present course of action. This
is the ultimate freedom of human being, our privilege of being a human.
