Kapha Dosha & Its Role In Ayurvedic Medicine
Ayurveda Kapha dosha represents water and earth element in body in ayurvedic
medicine. It is an essential factor in health and wellbeing as well as cure of
disorders in ayurvedic medicine.

Sanskrit Etymological Description Of Kapha:
"Shlisha alingane" is the root. "Manin" is the suffix.
This word means union, combination and joining.
"Ken jalen phanati iti kapham" is the another definition. This definition
refers to one that originates from Water primary element.
According to Charaka, Soma (the aqueous and unctuous part) is responsible for
the function of this humor in body (Charaka Samhita, Sutra Section, 1215).
Qualities Of Ayurveda Kapha:
- Heaviness or heavy.
- Cold.
- Soft or Smooth.
- Unctuous.
- Stable.
- Viscid or Sliminess.
- Sweet in taste in normal condition.
- Salty taste during vitiated condition.
- Slow.
Body Parts Where Ayurveda Kapha Dosha Is Expressed Prominently:
This humor is present throughout the body. However its presence is manifested
at some of the locations more than other organs. Out of all these parts,
thoracic region is the prominent location of this humor.
The chief action of Kapha is providing moisture. This action is accomplished
partially by mucus glands. They secrete mucus. These cells are present on almost all the
epithelial tissue layer that covers all the external and internal body surfaces.
General Activities In Body Influenced By Ayurveda Kapha Dosha:
Charaka mentioned the general actions of ayurveda kapha doshas as -
promoter of unctuousness, one that keeps cells and body parts together, one
giving stability to organs and body, the provider of virility or sexual prowess,
one that enhances strength and builds immunity, psychological qualities like
patience, forbearance, fortitude and steadiness.
The healthy and nonvitiated state of ayurveda kapha dosha is termed as
strength of body and the diseased and pathological state of this dosha is called
excessive mucus and it is responsible for disorders.
