Medicinal Herbs For
Lymphatic System & Respiratory System
Ayurvedic Herbs are beneficial for various disorders related to Lymphatic
channels and Lymph glands in our body. They can affect edema and enlargement of
lymph glands.
Medicinal herbs can stimulate
or depress the respiration. They are beneficial for nose, throat, airways and
lungs in many ways as in cough, sorethroat, asthma and other lung diseases.
Ayurvedic Herbs For Lymphatic System
|
These plants affect the lymph glands and lymphatic channels. They have three
chief actions.
-
Herbs reducing Edema
-
Herbs Promoting Edema
-
Herbs reducing Lymphadenopathy or lymph gland enlargement
Ayurvedic Herbs For Reducing
Edema:
According to Ayurveda, edema is
caused by Vata predominantly. The Anti-edema herbs possess hot active principle.
E.g. Dasamula or Ten roots group.
Herbs Promoting
Edema:
Salts
are mainly responsible for promoting edema. That is why patients of edema are
kept on salt restricted diet. These plants possess four taste – sour, salt,
bitter and pungent. Salt taste is chiefly responsible for edema.
Herbs For Lymphadenopathy:
Some herbs are useful in Lymph node enlargement
like Kanchanar, Mundi.
Ayurvedic Herbs For Respiratory System
|
Respiratory system is responsible for oxygen uptake and carbon di oxide
expulsion from the body. Plus oxygen is required in every cell for converting
the nutrients to energy and for various other metabolic activities. There are
many ways the medicinal herbs can benefit in various conditions of Respiratory
system - from nostrils to alveoli in the lungs.
Herbs Depressing The
Respiratory Center:
Some medicinal plants depress the
respiratory center in brain and thereby reduce the rate of respiration. These
plants suppress the cough reflex by depressing the cough center as well. e.g. Ahiphen, Vatsanabha.
Ayurvedic Herbs Stimulating The
Respiratory Center:
These can increase the rate of respiration
that might result from stimulation of Respiratory center in brain. e.g. Nux
vomica, Karpura.
Expectorants:
Mucus is secreted normally from
the epithelial lining of our airways - both upper and lower respiratory tract
and then it is moved upward with the help of cilia on the epithelial cells. This
is protective and physiological phenomenon.
Herbs that are expectorant work
in two ways - first by increasing the secretion of mucus so that the viscid
secretion that is very hard to cough up won't be able to disturb. These help to
reduce the viscosity of the sputum. These are also called Mucolytic agents.
The second group consists of
those herbs that help in expulsion of mucus or sputum. These are the proper
expectorants.
These herbs are with sour,
salt, bitter and pungent properties. The Air and Fire elements help in
expectoration while the Water element helps in Mucolytic action. The herbs with
sour and salty taste possess both of these actions.
Both the mucolytic and
expectorant functions are regulated by Vagus and Sympathetic nervous system.
According to Modern medicine these actions are mediated by -
-
Reflex Expectoranats: Some
anti-emetic herbs are useful for this effect e.g. Madanphala.
-
Central Expectorants: These
produce this effect by stimulating the centers in brain like Kakatundi.
-
By stimulating the Mucus
secretion through nerves e.g. Pilocarpine like activity.
-
By stimulating directly the
mucus secreting glands of respiratory tract like Iodide, salt, kshar.
Bronchial Sedatives
Or Ayurvedic Herbs For Cough:
Cough is a normal protective physiological nervous reflex. It is due to the
irritation of the nerve endings in the respiratory mucosa by irritants. These
herbs possess the sweet taste and unctuous and hot properties. e.g. Draksha,
Haritaki, Vibhitaki.
Bronchial Anti-spasmodics
Or Ayurvedic Herbs For Asthma:
Dyspnea or difficulty in breathing is the characteristic symptom of
Bronchial Asthma. It is due to swelling of bronchial mucosa as a result of
excessive secretion of mucus as a result of allergic reaction along with spasm
of bronchial lumen.
Anti-asthmatic herbs are
Anti-Kapha and Anti-Vata and with hot active principle. e.g. Shathi, Pushkarmula.
Anti-Hiccup Ayurvedic Herbs:
These
herbs stop the hiccough. These possess the same properties as the Anti-asthmatic
herbs. e.g. Shathi, Pushkarmula.
'Kanthya' Or
Ayurvedic Herbs
Beneficial For Throat:
The herbs that help in sorethroat or in the disorders of throat are
placed in this group. These are also Anti-Vata-Kapha and expectorants usually.
e.g. Mulethi, Sariva.
Pulmonary
Antiseptics:
The
medicinal plants that help in lung or respiratory infections are Pulmonary
antiseptics. These possess sharp odor and are commonly excreted via lungs. e.g.
Hingu, Rasona.
