Herbs For Digestive System(2)
Ayurvedic Herbs are greatly effective for disorders of Stomach and
Intestine. They are beneficial for suppressing hunger, as Gastric irritants, as
Gastric sedatives, as Carminatives and as Anti-emetic herbs. They can relieve
the dyspepsia, hyperacidity, gastric and duodenal ulcers.
On the small and large intestine,
beside other medicinal uses, the medicinal herbs of Ayurveda offers a vast and
comprehensive resource as Purgatives.
Herbs Suppressing
Hunger:
These
herbs possess Earth and Air element. They reduce the appetite or hunger. e.g.
astringent herbs, Ahiphena, excessive fat in diet. Very cold beverages along with food
might also reduce hunger.
Ayurvedic Herbs As Gastric Or Stomach
Irritants:
These herbs irritate the stomach by stimulating excessive secretion of acid in
stomach. These produce Hyperacidity. These are with sharp quality, hot in active
principle and with pungent-sour-salt taste. e.g. Sarashapa, Lanka.
Ayurvedic Herbs As Gastric Sedatives:
The herbs that reduce the
gastric irritation and either act as antacids or regulate the secretion of acid
from the stomach. e.g. Anti-emetic herbs.
Herbal Carminatives:
These
herbs stimulate the mild peristalsis in intestine and reduce the flatulence and
expels the air either by belching or through flatus. These are unctuous and hot
in active principle. e.g. Hingu, Yavani.
Vishtambhi Or Ayurvedic Herbs
Causing Flatulence:
These food or herbs cause flatulence and the flatus is not passed
easily. e.g. Katahal, Lonika.
Emetic Ayurvedic Herbs:
These medicinal
plants induce vomiting. These are dominant in Fire and Air element. This action
is due to the intrinsic effect of the herb. Emesis or induced vomiting is the
best route for the purification of vitiated Kapha dosha.
Vomiting center is situated in
Medulla oblongata of brain. This center is affected by many of the complex
factors like blood circulation, toxins in blood, temperature, blood circulation
in brain, many chemical and psychological stimulating conditions and substances.
This effect is mediated in two ways.
-
Local or Reflex Emetics Or
Gastric Emetics: These medicinal plants stimulate the Vagus nerve's
sensory fibers in stomach. e.g Sarshapa.
-
Central Emetics: After being
absorbed in blood, these plants stimulate the vomiting center in brain. e.g. Ahiphena.
Ayurvedic Herbs Assisting The
Emetics:
These plants don't induce vomiting but they assist in the induction of vomiting.
e.g. honey, salt, Mulethi.
Anti-Emetic
Ayurvedic Herbs:
Some medicinal herbs with cold
and astringent properties help in stopping the vomiting. These reduce the
irritation of gastric mucosa. Their action is also mediated in two ways.
-
Local action in Stomach - Jambu,
Amra leaves.
-
Central effect on Vomiting
center of Brain - Suchi.
Adsorbents Or Herbs For
Excessive Mucus In Gastro-intestinal Tract: These plants absorb the excessive
mucus or liquid part from the intestine. e.g. Kutaja.
Bulk Forming
Herbs:
Some medicinal plants due to
cellulose or fibers help in increasing the quantity of stool. Cellulose or
vegetable fibers are not digested in intestine. These substances stimulate the
intestinal motility to some extent. These are dominant in Earth element e.g. Udada or Yava.
Ayurvedic Herbs As Purgatives:
According to
Ayurveda, the substances that help to expel the doshas from the anal route are
purgatives. This action is due to intrinsic effect of the herb. These ayurvedic
herbs are dominant in Water and Earth element. This action is mediated in three
ways.
-
By increasing the quantity of
substances that are not absorbed like bulk forming agents.
-
By diminishing the reabsorption
of water from the intestine.
-
By stimulating the nerves in
small and large intestine resulting in increased motility.
Some herbal plants exert
purgation even without being taken orally. They are effective from subcutaneous
route like Sanai, Alua, Indrayana. The oil of Jaipal causes purgation after
rubbing it over the skin.
The Ideal Purgative
Of Ayurveda:
The ideal purgative expels respectively stool, bile, mucus and lastly
flatus. It doesn't cause any complication. There is increase of digestive fire,
strength in body, lightness and happiness. (Charaka Samhita Sidhi Section Ch. 1)
Purgatives are classified into
five groups.
-
Salt Purgatives: Salts cause
retention of water in the intestine and this in turn increase the motility of
intestine. The stool is loose in consistency.
-
Laxatives: The stool is soft.
These increase the intestinal motility slightly. The undigested food doesn't
come out. e.g. Amalatas, Castor oil, Turanjabin, Anjira, Hariataki, Olive oil.
-
Simple Purgatives Or Anthracine
Like Purgatives: These are in between the mild and drastic purgatives. The
digested and somewhat undigested food comes out. e.g. Trivrita, Alua,
Revandachini, Sanai.
-
Drastic Purgatives: These
strong pugatives cause burning and colic pain in abdomen. e.g. Jalapa, Jaipala,
Indrayana, Snuhi.
-
Cholagogue Purgatives: These stumulate the liver to secrete more bile. Bile causes the purgation. e.g.
Alua,
Kutaki, Revandachini.
Ayurvedic Herbs Assisting
Purgation:
Some medicinal plants assist
the action of purgatives and minimize the complications or adverse effects of
purgatives particularly drastic purgatives. e.g. Draksha, Shunthi, Ajowan.
