Ayurvedic Herbs benefit the small and large intestinal disorders. Medicinal
plants of Ayurveda are good as Stool Binders, Anti-diarrhea, Anti-dysentery,
Anti-colic or anti-spasmodic, Anti-helminthic, Insecticide and Vermifuge.
These offer great relief in
Liver, Gall bladder and Spleen disorders. Some of them are frequently used in
Ayurveda Panchakarma procedures like Aasthapan and Anuvasana Basti.
Stool Binding Agents
Or Anti-Diarrheal Ayurvedic Herbs:
The medicinal plants that help
to bind the loose stool as in diarrhea and dysentery. They are chiefly of two
types in Ayurveda.

'Grahi' Or Digestive-cum-Binders: These are generally hot in
active principle and with bitter taste and bitter vipaka. These first stimulate
the digestive fire and help in digestion of excess of mucus. Afterwards due to
their hot property and Anti-Vata action they bind the stool. These are dominant
in Fire and Air element. They are also called 'Hot Binders' or 'Mucus Binders'.
e.g. Jaiphala.

Astringents: These herbs are with dry quality, astringent
taste and cold active principle. These don't aid in digestion but they are
useful only because of stopping the diarrhea or frequency of motions. They are
given in diarrhea when there are no signs and symptoms of excessive mucus. These
are also called 'Cold Binders'. e.g. Dhataki, Kutaja.
Ayurvedic Herbs
Restoring Normal Coloration Of Stool:
These medicinal
plants restore the normal color of the stool. The color of stool is affected by
the vitiation of all the three doshas particularly Pitta. e.g. Jambu, Mulethi.
Anti-Colic Or
Anti-Spasmodic Ayurvedic Herbs:
These medicinal plants help in the
abdominal colicky pain. This pain is usually due to the flatulence. One should
consider the other causes of pain in abdomen like pain due to hyperacidity, pain
in gall bladder infection or pain of appendicitis. e.g. Hingu, Ajawon,
Panchakola.
Ayurvedic Herbs For
Aasthapana Process Of Panchakarma:
In this process of Ayurvedic
Panchakarma, the decoction of herbs with some other substances are administered
into the body via anal route. These purify the Vata humor and establishes the
body in good health. The metabolism of humors and tissues is maintained to the
normal. According to the taste of herbs these plants are described into six
groups.

Assisting The Asthapana Process Of Ayurvedic Panchakarma:
These
herbs help the above plants by helping to expel the doshas out of the body and
channels.
Ayurvedic Herbs For
The Anuvasana Process Of Panchakarma:
These herbs
maintain the tone of body muscles and make the body supple and unctuous. Oil
based herbs are the best for Vata disorders and Clarified butter based herbs are
the best for Pitta disorders. These are used in the Anuvasana Basti process of
Ayurvedic Panchakarma.
Medicinal Plants
Assisting The Anuvasana Process Of Panchakarma:
These
anti-vata herbs assist in the Anuvasana Basti process of Ayurveda Panchakarma.
e.g. Rasna, Devadaru.
Herbs Useful For
Upper & Lower Panchakarma Purification:
These medicinal plants are
useful for therapeutic induced vomiting, induced purgation and enema of Ayurveda
Panchakarma therapy.
Anti-Helminthic
Ayurvedic Herbs:
These medicinal plants damage
the worms in the intestine. They either cause the death of worms or make them
unconscious. So some purgatives are used along with these herbs. These are of
two types.

Specific Antihelminthic Herbs: Some herbs act specifically on
particular type of worm. e.g. Chauhar, Palashbeeja, Vidanga for pin worm;
Pomegranate bark, Puga for thread worm.

General Antihelminthic Herbs: These herbs affect all the
worms. These usually possess bitter, pungent and astringent taste and are with
hot active principle.
Insecticide Herbs:
These herbs kill the external parasites
like lice on the body surface. e.g. Dhattura.
Vermifuge Herbs:
These herbs help in expulsion of the worms
out of the body. e.g. Indrayava, Chirayata.

Liver & Spleen Disorders

Choleretics:
These herbs stimulate the Liver
to secrete more bile. These are bitter in taste and hot in active principle.
e.g. Bile salts.
Ayurvedic Herbs As
Cholagogues:
These medicinal plants cause
the gallbladder to expel the stored bile. This effect is mediated in two ways.

Direct
Cholagogues: Stored bile is secreted
by the contraction of Gall bladder. e.g. Castor oil.

Indirect
Cholagogues: Some herbs increase
the intestinal motility and increase the metabolic pathway of bile and this in
turn cause the secretion of more bile. e.g. Kutaki.
Anti-Cholagogues:
These medicinal plants reduce
the secretion of bile. e.g. Ahiphena.
Ayurvedic Herbs As
Biliary Lithontriptics:
These
medicinal plants are with sharp and hot property. These help to dissolve the
gall stone. e.g. Ikshuraka root.
Hypoglycemic Or
Anti-Diabetic Ayurvedic Herbs:
This action
is due to the intrinsic effect of the herbs. These are Anti-Kapha and dry. e.g.
Bijaka, Karavellaka.
Ayurvedic Herbs As
Anti-Hemorrhoids:
These medicinal plants reduce
the hemorrhoids by two ways. Firstly they help the proper evacuation of the
bowel. Secondly they prevent the stasis of blood in Hepatic Portal vein and it
reduces the stasis of blood in intestinal blood vessels and the hemorrhoids.
Some of these herbs are
astringent and cold in active principle and these are useful in bleeding piles.
e.g. Daruharidra, Nagakeshar. The other herbs are hot in active principle and
they are beneficial for non-bleeding piles. e.g. Chitraka, Abhaya.
Ayurvedic Herbs For
Spleenomegaly:
These
medicinal plants help in Spleenomegaly i.e. enlargement of spleen. e.g. Rohitaka,
Kumari, Indrayana, Sharpunkha.
