Fever & Infections
Ayurvedic Herbs are beneficial in Fevers and Other general infections. They
can act as Anti-microbial agent, as anti-pyretic , as Aama digesting, as Anti-Periodics,
as Refrigerants, for fever with chills, as anti-septic and deodorant herbs.
Ayurvedic Herbs For Fever &
Infections:
Fever or Pyrexia or increased temperature of body is a common
symptom and sign of most infections. The raised temperature indicates toward
some pathology that alters the Thermo-regulatory center in brain. Mostly it is
the toxins in the blood from various microbes and inflammatory products that
raise the temperature. Ayurveda describes the medicinal herbs in following ways.
Herbal Anti-Pyretic:
Anti-pyretic herbs reduces the increased temperature of body.
This action is mediated by following ways.

The anti-pitta herbs like Sariva.

By affecting the thermoregulatory center in brain like
Vetas,
Quinine.

By dilating the blood vessels in skin like
Vatsanabha, Anjana,
alcohol.

By promoting the sweating like
Diaphoretic herbs.

By decreasing the temperature due to their
cold contact like paste
of herbs.

By killing the microbes responsible for the disease like
Cinchona.
Aama Digestive
Medicinal Herbs:
Aama is a form of vitiated mucus found in stomach and
intestine to interstitial spaces. This is chiefly the cause of fever due to
wrong eating styles notwithstanding the nature of person's digestive fire and
other considerations. This fever is felt along with feeling of heaviness or
dullness in body and other features of Aama vitiation. Bitter taste herbs digest
the Aama and help in this kind of fever. e.g. Chirayata, Patola.
Medicinal For
Anti-Periodic Fevers:
Some fevers are periodic like
different kind of Malaria infections. These medicinal herbs help in those kind
of infections. e.g. Karanaja, Saptaparna, Cinchona.
Herbal
Refrigerants:
Refrigerant herbs pacify the
burning sensation felt during fever. These are Anti-Pitta and cold in active
principle. e.g. Kamala, Chandana.
Ayurvedic Herbs For Chills &
Fever:
The chills in fever is caused
by Vata and Kapha and due to sudden change in temperature. It might be due to
the toxins by the microbial infection. These herbs are Anti-Vata-Kapha and are
hot in active principle.
Anti-Septic Ayurvedic Herbs:
Antiseptic herbs act on
microbial infections and reduce the inflammatory reaction resulting from
infections. They act in two ways.

General Antiseptic Herbs: These
herbs are useful for all infections.

Specific Antiseptic Herbs:
These medicinal plants act on specific microbes like - Karpura on intestinal
microbes, Chandan and Shrivestaka on Urinary tract infection; Sarala on
Pulmonary infections.
Disinfectant Ayurvedic Herbs:
Disinfectant herbs are useful
for aseptic measures. They are useful in disinfecting the surrounding or
abscess, wound and procedure rooms. e.g. Sarshapa, Nimba, Guggula.
Deodorants:
Deodorant herbs remove the
malodor or bad smell. e.g. Koyla, Lobana.
Ayurvedic Herbs For Cleaning
Abscess:
These herbs are antiseptic and
disinfectant as well. e.g. Gangeruki.
