Ayurvedic Herbs Information For
Purification Of Supraclavicular Organs Via Nasal Route:
The word 'Nasya' is
used for the purification of supraclavicular (Above the collar bone or clavicle) organs like mouth, tongue, throat,
eyes, ear, face, sinuses, brain and crania nerves. For such purification purpose
herbs are used in various forms via nasal route. This process is one among the
Five chief purification process of Ayurveda Panchakarma therapy.
Pharmacologically this action
is divided into three groups -
-
Excretory Stimulation: Herbs with dry and sharp qualities are selected for
this action. Some herbs produce this action by increasing the mucus secretion
from the nasal passage. These are called Errhines. Another subgroup of herbs
are called Sternulatories - they irritate the nerve reflexes in the nose and
induce sneezing. e.g. tobacco, Kutaki (Picrorhiza or Picrorhiza kurroa), Shunthi
(Dried ginger), Maricha (Black pepper or Piper nigrum).
-
Nutritional Herbs: These sweet and unctuous herbs are useful in Vata or
Nervous disorders. Mostly herbal oils are used.
-
Pacifying Herbs: These are cold and astringent herbs. These are used in
bleeding and inflammatory disordes like Durva (Conch grass or Cynodon dactylon) juice.
Five Types Of Nasya Administration Of
Medicine Via Nasal Route:
Nasya is divided into five types according to
the form of medicine that is given via nasal route.
-
Oils processed with Herbs: These herbal oils can have all the three
pharmacological actions mentioned above.
-
The juice of the paste or decoction of the herbs is applied to the nasal
passage. Therapeutically it could be Excretory or Pacifying.
-
The powder form of herbs are blown in the nose. This is Excretory by
nature.
-
The Herbal smoke is used by nasal route. It can have all the three
therapeutic effects mentioned above.
-

Ayurvedic Herbs Information For
Diaphoretic Action:
These herbs induce the sweating process. These are also
called Sudorific herbs. This action is completed by many mechanisms.
-
By directly stimulating the sweating center in brain: e.g.
Karpura
(Camphor or Cinnamomum camphora).
-
By stimulating the nerves e.g.
Tobacco
leaves.
-
By dialating the blood vessels in skin e.g.
Ahiphen
(Opium).

By reflexly stimulating the
sweating center e.g. herbs inducing vomiting like Madanaphala (Emetic nut or
Randia spinosa).
Ayurvedic Herbs Information For
Diaphoresis Facilitation:
Some herbs are assisting diaphoresis or

Herbal Anhidrotics:
The medicinal plants that stops or reduce sweating are
called Anhidrotics. Usually these herbs have dry, cold property and the 'air'

is considered the best for this action in Ayurveda. Anhidrotic herbs act through
these mechanisms -
-
By depressing the parasympathetic nerves like
Atropa belladona.
-
By reducing the sensitivity of Sensory nerves like excessive cold.
-
By the specific actions like
Cinchona, Nux vomica.

Bald Persons:
Some substances are useful for
stimulating the growth of new hair follicles in the bald persons e.g. the tooth
of elephant. Remeber! it is a banned item now.
Herbal Depilatories:
The herbs that remove the hair from skin are herbal
depilatories. e.g. the powder of powder of Conch shells and Hartal (An Arsenic
Sulphide). Sulphides and the
alkali substances produce this effect.
These substances cause some irritation in the skin after application. After
removal of hair, some bland oil should be applied to the skin.
Herbs For The Hair:
These herbs help in natural color and growth of hair.
-
Herbs promoting the growth of hair: Two kinds of hair problems are common
- the falling of hair is more or there is baldness. These conditions involve
all the three bodily humors. Vata and Pitta helps in hair falling and Kapha
obstructs new growth on being vitiated. Herbs with sharp and hot qualities
deal with Kapha e.g. Lanka (Red chilles or Capsicum annuum), Cinchona
(Cinchona officinalis). These are to be used
externally primarily. The Anti-Vata-Pitta herbs and food are to be used both
internally and locally.
-
Herbs promoting the natural color of hair: These herbs help in restoration
of natural color of grey hair. Pitta humor is responsible for grey hair. e.g.
Bhringaraja
(Eclipta alba), Mehandi (Henna or Lawsonia inermis).
