Bacopa Monnieri
Use Bacopa Safely For
Greater Health
Bacopa is
a safe ayurvedic botanical even on longer use. B. monnieri has a long
history of several thousand years of safe use. There had been no complaints of
its side effect even in ten years of my clinical practice.
B. monnieri is a
great neurotonic, immuno-modulator, adaptogen, tranquilizing, memory
and learning enhancing, cerebral activator, anti-ulcer, antispasmodic,
anti-asthmatic ayurvedic herb. Other benefits are anti-allergic, free radicals
scavenging effect and as herbal supplement in Epilepsy, anxiety and depression.
Still there are few
considerations that should be kept in mind until more clear research studies
affirm its full safety on modern parameters. Presently there are clinical
research trials that reported to use B. monnieri for one year without any side
effects.
LD50 Of Bacopa:
Some studies were conducted to
test the safety of B. monnieri. The concentrated form of Bacosides were given in
single 20 to 30 mg dose and in multiple 100 to 200 mg dose daily. It had been
well tolerated and there were no ill effects.
The LD50 or half the lethal
dose of B. monnieri in rats was found 5gm per kg of body weight for aqueous
extract and 17 gm per kg of body weight for alcoholic extract. For an
average person weighing 70 kg it comes out 350 gm for aqueous extract and 1.2 kg
for alcoholic extract! One might prefer to see the psychiatrist before
attempting such high dosage!
B.
monnieri's
alkaloids brahmine, herpestin are highly toxic when
administered at doses of 0.5 mg per kg of body weight. But they are in
very low concentrations in B. monnieri or its therapeutically used extract.
Bacopa & Drug Herb
Interactions:
We can see below that many
of the drug herb interactions can actually be used as beneficial effects in
our body. There are limited mechanisms of achieving some effect in our body.
Say, there are few mechanisms that are involved in reducing the blood pressure
in individuals. Modern Pharmacological drug exploit those mechanisms
specifically.
And if some herb is useful as
hypotensive or anti-hypertensive, it might act through any one or more of
physiological mechanisms that are involved in causing the fall or normalization
of blood pressure in our body. And we label that effect as Drug Herb Inteactions.
REMEMBER! most of the time the so called drug herb interactions are not
harmful if they are judiciously used and considered properly and some plan or
line of treatment is followed.
Bacopa & Morphine:
B. monnieri helps in the
morphine induced toxicity. It counteracts their side effects on our body and
mind. It could be used as adjuvant herbal supplements for deaddicting from
drug abuse of morphine or other opium related drugs.
Bacopa & Phenytoin:
B. monnieri is good for
dealing with cognition deficit side effect of Phenytoin. It could better be
used as herbal supplement in Epilepsy. Its anti-seizure activity presents at
LD50 dosage and that is quite impractical for anybody to consume this ayurvedic
botanical at that dose.
Bacopa & Thyroid
Hormones:
The effect of B. monnieri on T4
Thyroid hormone is stimulation of this hormone at dosage far exceeding the
therapeutic dosage and no one would be taking this medicinal herb in that
dose.
Bacopa &
Barbiturates:
B. monnieri potentiates the
effect the effect of Barbiturates so they are needed in lower dosage.
This should be a side benefit instead of side effect as when under
medical or health care supervision, if you are able to reduce your barbiturate
dose, you would be able to live healthier and without the side effects of
Barbiturates.
Bacopa & Anti-Hypertensives:
The effect of B. monnieri on
systolic blood pressure is insignificant. It causes a mild drop (3-7 mm of Hg
drop) in blood pressure. It could not produce hypotension in therapeutic dose
range.
Bacopa &
Anti-Depressants, Anxiolytics:
The benefits of B. monnieri
have been so good in anxiety and depression that it could be used alone for mild
to moderate problems. However if you are taking it with other pharmacologic drug
the caution should be taken to monitor the response and the dosage.
Bacopa Overuse
Increasing Vata:
According to Ayurveda, overuse
of B. monnieri can cause vitiation of Vata humor due to its cold property. It might cause headache,
vertigo, feeling of weakness. There might be itching and urticaria rarely.
Clearly the dosage that might cause these symptoms are far away from the
therapeutic dosage. There lies no harm in therapeutic administration of B.
monnieri.
To counteract the ill effects
of overdose of B. monnieri, the administration of dry coriander, mild purgatives
and anti-Vata regimen are sufficient.
Bacopa In Children &
Pregnant & Breast Feeding Ladies:
There are studies for its safe
use in children of 8 to 10 year. In India, the ayurvedic doctors use it without
any ill effects in children, pregnant ladies and breast feeding mothers.
As There are no parallel
studies of its use in children, pregnant and breast feeding ladies like that of
modern pharmacological drugs, it should not be used in countries until the
herbal regulation authorities clear it for safety in these individuals.
And the best of both world
could be had by using it cyclically in these individuals. That is use it 3 or 4
days a week and three weeks in a month.
