It is a great immunostimulant,
tranquilizing, mind pacifying, neuroleptic, psychotropic herb with great action

Habitat:
This ayurvedic herb is found in
humid, wet and damp soil, shallow water and marshes. It is found commonly up to
4000 feet of altitude from sea level in India and the tropics like Srilanka,
Singapore. It is found in areas adjacent to well where water is being poured and
soil is wet. It could easily be cultivated if water supply is adequate.
About The Plant:
Brahmi is a small creeping herb with many branches.
The Stem:
this is soft, succulent, hairy and with glands. Roots
emerge out of nodules and directly go to soil. That is why this herb looks quite
short and drooping despite being 2-3 feet in height. Branches run for 4-12 inch
in length.
The Leaves:
Leaves are fleshy, 0.5-0.75 inch long, oblong or rounded,
without petioles. These are attached to branches in alternate order.
The Flower:
Bluish white or light pink colored flowers come out of
the angle of leaves. Flowering appears in summer after which fruition results.
The Fruit:
This is oval and sharp at apex.
The Propagation:
Brahmi can easily be propagated by seed or by
cuttings.
Is It Native To
Florida?
Several species of this herb are
native to Florida. This is a small and sprawling herb found commonly in fresh
and brackish waters. According to Wunderlin 1998, at least three species of
this herb are native to Florida.
B. caroliniana or water
hyssop or lemon bacopa is distinguishable by its blue flowers and lemony
scent when its leaves are crushed. This herb is commonly found in Southern US
and MD (Kartesz, 1999).
