The Ayurvedic Varieties
Of Bilwa Or Bael Or Aegle marmelos:
There are two
varieties of this medicinal herb according to Ayurveda. These are based on the
habitat.
-
'Vanya' or Forest Variety:
It has great number of spikes and the fruit is smaller.
-
'Gramya' Or Country Variety:
The fruit is large and the number of spikes are less.
Habitat Of Bel:
This ayurvedic herb is commonly found in India especially in dry
hilly area and up to 4000 feet altitude from sea level. It is usually present in
Indian temples.
The Plant Of Aegle
marmelos:
This ayurvedic herbal plant is
25 to 30 feet in height. Its stem is 3-4 feet in diameter. There are sharp,
axial one inch long spikes on this tree.
The Leaves Of Aegle
marmelos:
The leaves are compound,
trifoliate and with a peculiar fragrance. The leaflets are oval or lancet
shaped, 2 to 4 inch long. The lateral leaflets are without petiole and the
terminal one has a long one. The petiole is 1 to 2.5 inch long. Leaves shed in
summer.
The Flower Of Aegle
marmelos:
Fruition occurs along with new
leaves. The flowers are greenish white and fragrant. Flowering occurs in May to
June and fruition occur next year in the month of May to June.
The Fruit Of Bilwa:
The fruit is both edible and
medicinal. The diameter of its fruit is 2 to 4 inch. It is spherical or oval. It
is greenish when unripe and upon ripening it turns into grey-yellowish color.
The pulp of the fruit has 8 to 15 segments. The peel of the fruit or its shell
is hard, smooth and fragrant. The pulp is yellow, soft, sweet and fragrant.
The Seeds Of Bel:
The seeds are small, hard. Multiple seeds are
covered in a viscid material in the pulp.
