Welcome to Bead tree - This ayurvedic herb
is reputed in Anorectal disorders like Piles or Hemorrhoids. It is known in
Ayurveda as 'Mahanimba' or 'Bakayan'. Persian lilac or Bead tree is its english
name. The name of this herb is after the 'Nimba' or margossa tree or Azadirachta
indica. The fruits of the two plants are similar. Its Latin name is Melia
azedarach Linn.

The Species:
There is another species of this medicinal herb. It is
Melia
composita Willd. This herb has big leaves and fruits. It is also found in Asam,
Orissa, Bengal and on the western coast of India.
The Habitat:
This ayurvedic herb is found in Himalayan forests up to 3000
feet altitude from sea level. It is also found in China and Iran.
The Plant:
This is a medium sized tree with 30 to 40 feet of height.
The Leaves:
The leaves are 1 to 2 feet long. The leaflets are 1/2 to 3 inch
long and 1/4 to 1 inch wide. Leaves fall in December to April.
The Flowers:
Flowers are blue in color and fragrant. Flowering period is May
to June.
The Fruits:
Fruits are green when unripe and these turn yellow on ripening.
The diameter of the fruit is 1/2 to 3/4 inch. The fruit pulp is very hard. The
fruits mature in winter.
The Seeds:
There are 5 to 7 brownish seeds inside the fruit.
