Know Which Herbs, Herbal Remedies and Herbal Supplements You Should Avoid Buying
And Why?
Buying herbal remedies. Know what types of botanicals and natural supplements
are doomed and why? Stay away from them because all that they can do is adding
dollars to marketers’ wallet and making you poorer without providing health
benefit.
Many people might scream and shout at me that what this doc is telling us on his
website. He is supposed to be a nice and educated guy and he should promote
buying herbal remedies and natural supplements.
But please don’t get me wrong. I am doing just that! I am here to promote the
benefits of botanicals and herbal remedies and health giving supplements. And it
is my privilege to do so. You will agree with me after reading this article as a
part of supplements buying guide.
I want to caution each of you from buying herbal remedies that don’t
offer value for your money and that don’t add value to your health either.
Avoid Buying Herbal Remedies And Supplements Of This Type, As They Are Doomed:
Some ‘smart’ (read cheap and cheat) marketers are selling you herbs that contain
only 300 or 500 or less amount of herbal powder in capsule or tablet form. There
are very few herbs that are strong enough to benefit health with such low
dosage.
Almost all of these herbs are very effective either as single herbs or in
combination with other botanicals. But single herbs need to be taken in optimal
quantity or normal dosage before they can give you any benefit.
Take the example of Ashwagandha or Withania somnifera or Indian ginseng. This is
one of the top anti-stress, antioxidant and immunity boosting herbal remedies.
Its normal dosage varies 2-5 gm for adults twice a day.
So if some particular marketer is selling 300 mg or 500 mg ashwagandha powder in
capsule, and most often you will find the price quite high or comparable to
other good supplements, it won’t benefit you at one or two capsule dosage while
you will be generously opening your wallet for them for improving your health.
Does This Apply For Polyherbal Formulations As Well?
The ineffectiveness of low dosage is true for single herbs as well as polyherbal
compounds. The compound formulations should have an effective dosage before it
could give health benefits.
You might be taking bacopa, gotu kola, ashwagandha, passionflower, valerian,
kava formula for relieving the anxiety. These six herbs are present in 500 mg
capsule in equal amount, that is, 50 mg powder of each herb. How could 50 mg of
powder of each of these herbs help you get rid of nervousness?
How To Find Out The Effective And Normal Dosage Of Herbs:
The exercise of finding the effective dose of single herbs is easy. Simply visit
several reputed online resources or some other credible resource (like my
website!) and you could get a fair idea for the appropriate dosage.
And remember that with most of the herbs in capsule or tablet form, only herbal
extract promise you the optimum and beneficial dosage unless you are going to
consume half a dozen to one dozen of tablets or capsules. The choice is yours!
300 mg of 10:1 extract of ashwagandha is a fine dosage, 200-300 mg of bacopa
extract with 12:1 potency is a good example and a good single herb based
supplement.
This becomes a little tricky and complex with poly herbal formulations. You can
rely on some good and professional resources (like your )You should check
whether the formulation is containing a 300-500 mg of herbal extract in
sufficient power. If it contains this much amount, it is going to be good value
for your money and health.
Why Do Marketers Are Doing This?
There are two common sense reasons for doing this – ignorance or for making
money. You can forgive ignorance but it is very unlikely because marketers have
summoned their energy and money in building the webpages and uploading the
websites for you.
This is mostly done deliberately to make money by cashing on the ‘herbal’ or
‘natural health’ wave. I have seen many such websites – Some are selling
Ashwagandha for $39 per bottle, others at $14-19 per bottle.
Some standard websites are selling ashwagandha extract (300-500 mg) for $14
listed price. It means that you will receive a further 8-10% discount. When you
compare it with price of other products that are selling powder based capsules
for $14 or $19, you will find that you are paying the same amount or more money
while you might get merely 10% of herbs or herbal remedies. You will feel
sucked. Won’t you?
Check The Label While Buying Herbal Remedies And Know What You Are Getting For Those Bucks:
You can easily save yourself from the pangs of these marketers. Develop the
habit of checking the label information for ingredients and their actual
composition. Don’t buy any product if its label is not mentioning the quantity
of ingredients.
Try to calculate herbal extract with its equivalent amount of herbal powder and
you will get the right amount. 300 mg of bacopa extract in 10:1 strength equals
to 3 gm of powder and hence is a good dosage.
If you pay a little more time, a few minutes more while choosing the right
product from health food store or from websites, you can easily get good value
for your money and above all great value for your health. You might have plenty
of money to spend away but not plenty of health to squander away.
Make buying herbal remedies, herbs and supplements a real treat for your health.
