This ayurvedic herb is known by the name of Saptaparna or Saptaparni.
Its latin name is Alstonia scholaris. It is used in Ayurveda as a bitter
and as an astringent herb for skin disorders, urticaria, and for upper
purification process of Panchakarma.

Habitat:
This ayurvedic herb is commonly found in Bengal, Southern India and on Western
coastal region of India. It is found in Himalayan region up to 3000 feet of
height.
The Plant Of Dita:
This is a large evergreen tree and with 40 to 50 feet height. The bark is thick,
brittle, white on the external surface and yellowish on the inside. Some white
milk oozes on cutting the bark.
Leaves:
Leaves are found in the group of Seven (That is why it is called Saptaparni in
Hindi - Sapta means seven and Parna or parni means leaves). Leaves are 4 to 6
inch long and 1 to 2 inch in diameter. The upper surface of the leaves are
smooth and green and the lower surface is greyish white. The milk also oozes on
cutting the leaves.
Flowers:
Flowers are greenish white. Flowering occurs in early winter - November to
December.
Legumes:
These are 1 to 2 feet long. Small white seeds have some cotton like fibers
attached. Fruition period is late winter season - January to February.
