The Methods Of Purification Of Guggul Extract From Bedellium

Guggula Extract is derived from Guggulipid in several ways. The Ayurvedic purification process is elaborate and specific enough by describing general purification necessary for all preparations of Commiphora mukul and specific purification for modifying the therapeutic effects for particular disease.

The Need For Purification:

There are two objectives to purify a natural herb. First is to remove the external and internal impurities. The second reason is to increase the medicinal value.

External impurities are in the form of dust, dry leaves and other foreign materials present in Guggula. After purification, the herb becomes safer and more effective for use. Sometimes additional medicinal values are also instilled in the formulation.

Guggula extract is produced after two types of Purification.

  • General Purification
  • Specific Purification.

General Purification Of Guggula:

General purification is carried out by keeping the Guggula in hot water overnight. The quantity of water is four times the weight of Guggula. Next morning, It is heated very lightly. When the quantity of water remains half, the mixture is filtered with a cotton cloth or a mesh.

Usually iron pan is used to purify Guggula and the environment should be dry and sunny. For industrial purpose, it is dried in Dryer and there is possibility of loss of volatile elements.

Steam jacketed drying pans are standard for commercial purpose. Though it takes longer to dry Guggula, but the temperature is controlled around 50-60 degree centigrade.

Specific Purification:

Specific Purification of Guggula increases the medicinal properties and helps in modifying the pharmacological actions. The same Guggula is processed with different herbs and it is made active biologically in a differential way.

Guggula is boiled with decoctions of herbs for a particular disease and then filtered. This renders specificity of action in C. mukul. (Bharat Bhaisajya Ratnakara, Vol. 2 - 1320)

  1. Increasing Vitiated mucus-digestive and mobile property: Cow urine or decoction of Triphala or triple myrobalans is used (Ras Chandanshu).
  2. Increasing Rejuvenative Property: Decoctions of Guduchi, Triphala and Cow milk is respectively used one by one. (Rasendra Sara Sangraha, 1331)
  3. Increasing Vitiated Mucus-digestive property: Cow urine is used. (Rasendra Bhasakara)
  4. Increasing Anti-Vata property: Dasmula decoction is used. (Bharat Bhaisajya Ratnakara, 2/1332)
  5. Increasing the body tonic property: Milk is used. (Rasatarangini, 24/579)

Presently in India, there is at least one company that is using the specific purification of Guggula - Shree Dhootapapeshwar Ltd., Mumbai. This company offers a good range of Guggula that are prepared under Good Manufacturing Certification conditions.

Precautions During Guggula Purification:

  1. Never put guggula preparations on strong heat. Always apply low temperature. High temperature causes loss of volatile parts and reduced weight and quality.
  2. Use iron pan for purification otherwise it sticks to the container.
  3. Keep the mixture in motion. This helps the proper dissolution of Guggula gum.
  4. Filter the mixture when it is still hot. On cooling the mixture solidifies and is hard to filter.
  5. Sunny days are better for its purification.
  6. The filtered and purified mixture of Guggula should be stored in container with clarified butter applied previously to its inner surface.

How Guggula Tablets Evolved In Ayurveda:

Thousand of years back, the basic herbal preparations of Ayurveda were five - juice, paste or powder, decoction, hot and cold infusion. There were several problems with these basic formulations.

First is that these are needed to be used immediately. These preparations deteriorate very soon. Second reason is the taste, odor and color are still unacceptable to many persons. And the dose determination also pose trouble.

Later powder is formulated by drying the herbal paste. Properly stored powders retain full medicinal value for two months according to ancient Ayurveda practitioners.

Vagbhata mentioned in detail in Ashtanga Sangraha that and later Sharangadhara shed more light on tablet formulation of herbs in Sharangadhara Samhita.

Tablets retained their full potency for one year on proper storage. One can take the right dosage. The determination of the dose is very easy. The bad taste and smell are not bothering. Now sugar coating or other non-sugar coating make the pill quite attractive!

Guggula also acts like a binding agent as well as the chief ingredient in herbal tablets based on it. So there is no need of binders.
