Guggulu

The History & Various Types Of Guggul

Guggulu is reputed in Ayurvedic medicine as it acts on several body channels and micro-channels, potentiate the effects of other ingredients, strengthening and vitiated mucus digestive.

Guggulu is a oleo-resinous secretion of a herb. It is found inside the bark of stem and with a thick covering. During cold, the covering constricts and it comes out. During summer this secretion melts and come out.

The Historical Aspect Of Guggulu

Guggul In Vedic Literature:

Atharvaveda:

  • This herb is mentioned as fragrant and vital energy enhancing agent.
  • As Vermicide  or anti-helminthic and Anti-tubercular.
  • Two types of this herb is described - one near the rivers and the other near the ocean.
  • It was used chiefly for sacred fire rites and for fumigation. (Atharvaveda 4-Kashka 19 Sukta 18)
  • It was mentioned for leucoderma (white patches of skin) and greying of hair. (Atharvaveda 2/23/1)
  • If the fragrance of fumigation this herb is smelled daily, one can boost his resistance against infections like tuberculosis. This refers to the immuno-boosting effect of Commiphora mukul. (Atharvaveda 2/36/7; 4/37/3; 19/38/1)

Post Vedic Literature:

In Ayurvedic literature, Commiphora mukul has several references in all the books.

  • Sanjnana (Consciousness restoring) group (Charaka Samhita, Sutra Section 4/48).
  • Astringent group (Charaka Samhita, Vimana Section 8/114).
  • Eladi group (Sushruta Samhita, Sutra Section, 38/24).
  • Katuka group (Sushruta Samhita, Sutra Section, 38/24).
  • Eladi group (Astanga Sangraha 12/66).
  • Eladi group (Astanga Hridaya 15/43-44).
  • Karpuradi group (Bhava Prakasha, First Section 6/2/31).
  • Chandanadi group (Yoga Ratnakar).
  • Chandanadi group (Rajanighantu).
  • Guggulavadi group (Nighantu Adarsha).
  • Dhoopa group, Guna-dosha section, (Nighantu Ratnakar).
  • Oushdhi group (Kaideva Nighantu).
  • Guggulu kalpa (Harita Samhita).

Types Of Guggulu

According To Color:

These five types are described in Bhava Prakasha's Materia Medica.

  • Black color.
  • Blue color.
  • Lotus like color.
  • Red color like Ruby.
  • Golden color.

Commercial Varieties Of Guggulu:

  1. Kana Guggula: The granular form with reddish yellow color is soft on touch. It is found in Marawada region of Rajasthan state.
  2. Bhainsa Guggula: Greenish yellow colored variety is smooth on touch. It is found in Kachha region.

Guggulu According To Medicinal Properties:

Bhava Prakasha again described these varieties based on medicinal use.

  • New Guggul: It has comparatively less tendency for reducing obesity. This is smooth, golden in color, fragrant, sticky and like ripe Jamun or Jamun (Syzygium cumini) fruit.
  • Old Guggul: This has greater tendency to reduce weight and burn fat. This form is dry, with unpleasant odor, and without much medicinal property. It should only be used for reducing weight.

  1. Mukle Arjaka - Reddish.
  2. Mukle Sakalavi - Brownish.
  3. Mukle Yahood - Yellowish.
  4. Mukle Arabi - Brownish Red.
  5. Mukle Hindi - Violet-black.

Varieties Of Guggulu & Use In Medicine:

  1. For use in Men: Golden Guggula.
  2. For Men & Animals: Black.
  3. For Horses: Lotus colored and Ruby colored.
  4. For Elephants: Dark Blue.

Guggulu According To Rajanighantu:

  1. Kana Guggula: This type is soft, fragrant and best for medicinal use. It has greenish yellow color granular structure. It is found in Marwada and Bhuja region in India. It has bitter taste, hot in active principle. It is useful in tumors, abdominal disorders, pain, flatulence and Kapha based diseases.
  2. Earth-Born Guggula: This is found in Kachha region of India and Sindha region of Pakistan. This soft and fragrant guggula is light yellow and light green in color. It is bitter and pungent in taste and hot in active principle. This is good for Kapha-Vata based disorders, as antimicrobial and as memory enhancing herb.
  3. General Guggula: This type is bitter and pungent in taste and hot in active principle. Kapha-Vata based disorders, bronchitis, worms, abdominal disorders, spleen disorders, edema, piles respond well. It is used as rejuvenative as well.
