Among ayurvedic herbal remedies for gas, Hingavastaka churna or Hingvastaka powder
enjoys a prominent place. It is a ayurvedic formulation that is used as home remedy for excessive gas

pain. It is used as a foundation in many other ayurvedic
remedies that are used for other disorders.
Reference Book Hingavastaka Churna:
Hingavastaka powder is an ancient formulation of herbs that is mentioned in
.... with other herbal remedies for gas.
Ingredients Of Hingavastaka Powder:
Look at this simple formulation of herbal remedies for gas with only eight
herbs. Together all these herbal remedies for gas help to keep your stomach and
intestine in healthy condition.
- Purified Hing or Asfoetida 1 part
- Shunthi or dried ginger 8 parts
- Pippla or long pepper 8 parts
- Maricha or black pepper 8 parts
- Ajowan 8 parts
- Saindhava Salt or rock salt 8 parts
- Black cumin seeds 8 parts
- White cumin seeds 8 parts
- Ghee or Clarified Butter small quantity for frying asafoetida
Method Of Preparation Of Hingavastaka Churna:
Purified asafoetida is fried in ghee or clarified butter. Asafoetida turns
brown during frying. Then all the herbs and asafoetida are mixed together in
blender or mixer. Alternatively if we have all the herbs in powder form already,
we can mix the herbal powders manually.
Remember to mix powders thoroughly otherwise some parts of this churna will
have more asafoetida or other spices. After mixing the powder, store this powder
in zip lock pouches or airtight containers. This powder remains in good
condition for two months to one year depending upon the packing. And you have
this wonderful herbal remedies for gas and indigestion.
We seal the polythene bags with hinguvastaka powder and then keep the bags in
airtight container. Only a small quantity that could be used within one or two
weeks is kept in airtight container.
Dosage Of Hinguvastak Powder:
Hinguvastaka churna is taken in the dosage of 2-5 gms or 1/2-1 teaspoonful
twice or thrice a day. Ideally it should be taken with lukewarm water or water
at normal temperature. Avoid taking it with chilled water or soft beverages.
Additionally it can be taken with fruit juices and fruits. Don't take this
powder with milk.
According to ayurvedic medicine, herbal remedies for gas and flatulence are antivata
and these should be
taken just before meals and breakfast. This seems to work even better for vata
disorders affecting abdomen or digestive system.
Tablets Or Capsules Of Hinguvastak Churna:
Some ayurvedic pharmaceuticals companies are coming out with tablets or capsules of herbal powders. They take some part of herbal extract and some part
of herbal powder and prepare tablet or capsule. That is fine if you have some
difficulty in taking powders.
But we need to pay more price for equivalent amount of powder and we consume
several chemicals and gelatin along with tablets or capsules. And the taste of
Hinguvastak powder is good. Children and ladies love its taste and prefer to
lick it with their fingers with different facial expressions!
Further, ayurvedic herbal formulations are not based on a single herb or
single formula. So if we need to add some ayurvedic bhasmas or mineral
preparations or some other nutritional substances, it remains very simple to add
something to powders.
Beneficial Effects:
Hinguvastaka churna is good for Vata based digestive and abdominal disorders.
Flatulence, gas formation, indigestion, loss of appetite, intestinal colic pain
are some of the disorders that respond well to this powder.
Dr. Vikrama's Comments:
Flatulence, increased gas formation and belching are the first rated
indications. Dyspepsia, loss of appetite and indigestion are also benefited.
Many mothers complain that their children are not eating properly. So they can
give it to children to improve their appetites.
But remember that loss of appetite should not be accompanied by hyperacidity
or Amlapitta disorder or peptic ulcer. Sour and acidic belching, pain in abdomen
(in the middle top of abdomen, the triangular region between ribs, corresponding
to epigastric region medically, this is the region of stomach), increased
appetite or loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting are some of the features of
Amlapitta. In those cases, this powder should not be used.
Common abdominal pain, intestinal colic pain are also relieved by this
powder.
I use this powder in constipation as asafoetida will increase the intestinal
motility and other ingredients will produce more digestive juices. Senna based
preparations should not be taken routinely. It is OK to use them once or twice a
week to get relatively fuller colon cleanse.
I prefer using this powder in Acute amoebiasis or amoebiac dysentary with
other ayurvedic herbs. This disease is characterized by intestinal colic and
flatulence. So this powder will support this disorder though it won't be able to
eradicate the infection by Entamoeba histolytica.
One of my professors advised students to use this powder in persons with
angina for supporting the abdomen as asafoetida is having some corornary dilator
effect. And I have seen and felt the need for supporting the abdomen or
intestines even in acute myocardiac infarctation (Heart Attack) cases in modern
hospitals. Once I visited my uncle in Intensive Cardiac Care Unit and the first
thing he complained was about flatulence and doctor's negligence of this
trouble. So Hinguvastak churna might be or might not be a coronary dilator but
it can help with flatulence.
Unlike activated charcoal that is used in modern medicine in flatulence, this
herbal powder is superbly beneficial as it helps digestion, increases intestinal
motility and helps to expel the flatus out.
Hinguvastaka Powder works well with other ayurvedic medicine like
Aarogyavardhini vati, Shankha vati, Rasonadi vati, Shankha bhasma, Kumaryasava,
Avipattikara Churna.
Precautions And Safety:
Moderate Hypertension and Edema patients should use this powder with caution
as it contains salt in 12.3% concentration.
One should pay equal attention to proper and balanced nutrition, general and
abdominal exercises to have good abdominal and overall health.
Some grave conditions like intestinal perforation, peritonitis, appendicitis
are to be tackled in surgical units under the care of a Surgeon. And these
disorders are accompanied by serious symptoms and a history. Under no such grave
circumstances, one should use herbal home remedies like this powder. Go straight
to a doctor!
