THEME OF THE MONTH

Interview Of Dr Praveen Choudhary : "Ayurveda's Parasurgical Procedures Are Of Paramount Significance In Present Scenario."

We invited Dr Praveen Choudhary and Dr B.S. Sharma as the chief guest and guest of honor on Annual function of National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA, Baraut).

Dr Praveen Choudhary is actually five year senior to Dr Vikrama. Dr Choudhary completed BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) from Rishikul State Ayurvedic College, Haridwar. Thereafter, he completed in MS (Master Of Surgery, Ayurveda) from Banaras Hindu University.

Now he is a lecturer at Tibbiya Ayurvedic College, New Delhi and pursuing his PHD in Ayurvedic Surgery. We reserve the interview of Dr B.S. Sharma for next month. He is a specialist of Kaumarbhritya ( MD, Pediatrics in Ayurveda). He is also a faculty member of Tibbiya Ayurvedic College.

HH:  What is the present scope of surgical procedures of Ayurveda in current scenario when modern surgery has developed to a marvelous accuracy and depth?

DR PRAVEEN:  Definitely, the modern surgery has developed to such height as could be astonishing to the generation just 50 years behind us. Ayurveda tradition is thousands of year old.

Ayurveda suffered a lot especially in Surgical procedures during the rise of Jainism & Buddhism in India. Their following the concept of Non-violence halted the progress of Ayurvedic Surgery. There are examples of study of Anatomy after cadaver (dead body) dissection as is the trend in Medical College. There had been their own methods of preservation of cadavers.

Still, Ayurveda has a lot to offer to Modern world on both theoretical and practical ground. Ayurveda's herbal medicine and Panchakarma got popular throughout the world. Some of the recognition of Para-surgical methods like Leech therapy and Ksar Sutra are due to the credit of Ayurveda.

HH:  How Ayurveda presents the science and art of Surgery?

DR PRAVEEN:  Ayurveda describes eight chief surgical procedures. They are the mainstay of Surgical procedures in Ayurveda. Modern Surgery, however advanced it has gone, is still unable to devise the ninth surgical procedure. Ayurveda genius mentioned it all not in a mythological manner, they treated medicine as well as surgery as a great discipline that has its own science and art.

Ayurvedic Surgical Methods are still the basis of the concept and practice of Plastic Surgery.

Ayurvedic Para-Surgical procedures are just a blessing in itself. They are able to treat many a conditions that would need otherwise Surgical operation.

Leech therapy is simply a wonderful procedure that has got worldwide reputation.

Ksar Sutra (Herbal Alkali processed medicated cotton threads) are so effective in the treatment of Hemorrhoids that even surgeons from AIIMS (All India Institute Of Medical Sciences) and other reputed Hospitals and Institutes Of Modern Medicine are referring patients to us at Tibbiya Ayurveda College, New Delhi.

HH:  What is your exposure to Surgical practice? How much Surgeries do you perform in one year?

DR PRAVEEN: We receive a good number of patients in the OPD of Dept. Of Surgery at Tibbiya Ayurvedic College. Around 2000 persons undergo surgical procedures in a year by me. This is a good number as compared to Medical Colleges.

All this statistics show that Ayurvedic surgery is not some disjointed theory. It is a scientific practice of Surgery. The procedures give relief to patients who return cheerfully. We enjoy our share of service.

HH: What type of patients do come to Tibbiya Ayurveda College & Hospital usually?

DR PRAVEEN: Ano-rectal diseases like Hemorrhoids, Fistula in Ano, Fissures, General Surgeries for Hernia, Appendicitis, Gall bladder, Renal calculi are performed.

Quite a good number of patients do need Para-surgical procedures like Agni Karma, Leech therapy.

Holistic Herbalist thanked Dr Praveen Choudhary for sharing his expertise. The only thing that was of concern that night was that he was looking to his watch again and again as the children of doctors presented various cultural programs in between the rather dry medical talks!

We got the permission of Dr Praveen Choudhary for our visitors who feel to contact him. As Usual, you can go to Contact Us & Feedback Form and post your query.

PROMOTING THE UNDERSTANDING HOLISTIC HEALTH

Last month, we discussed about practicing the presence of God. This topic might have felt some odd or awkward or old stylish to some people. But God or The Supreme Consciousness is truly our Source, The Holy Father.

Our Consciousness is derived from His Consciousness. Jesus Christ told His disciples that we are made in His Image. This might seem mythological truth to some 'orthodox modern scientist'. But, this is the great but, It is true.

According to Vedic Science, there is some individual consciousness in ourselves, we call it our soul. In the same manner, there is Consciousness principle pervading through all of the world - known and unknown world or universe.

We accept this Universal Consciousness to be a manifestation of GOD. All of the great saints and incarnations do manifest THIS consciousness in more ways that we can comprehend. That is why it appeared that many a saints are misunderstood by folks of their time. Jesus Christ is a great example.

OK, let us come back to holistic health. How can we achieve greater and fulfilling health through Consciousness principle?

If we feel that we can't digest the concept of practicing the presence of GOD during the day, there is another exercise or practice that even God won't be angry with!

This is to be aware of our Consciousness. Right! just be aware of the power that enable us to think, feel and enjoy and do everything else.

During the day, sit still, close your eyes and be aware, don't think, just be aware, just be. Do this practice for 30 to 60 seconds several times of the day and feel the change.

This practice is the modern version of New Age Spirituality for practicing the presence of GOD.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

One Lady from USA

Are there herbs that can help the religious minded person to moderate their sexual drive? Can this help in concentration and meditation?

Reply:

Surely there is holistic help on this issue. We don't like to disclose the name for such questions.

It is a good to strive to evolve spiritually with one's faith and by following the meditative practices in one's religion. Ayurveda and herbs do help.

Some herbs like Parsika Yavani (Henben) are given to inmates of prison by some jailers to reduce the sexual drive. And it is illegal way to use this herb. Other narcotics, addictive herbs are not even to be used.

The anxiolytic drugs like alprazolam, lorazepam etc. are to be avoided as well.

The perfect choice will be to use such herbs as Bacopa. It is known as Brahmi in Sanskrit language. Bacopa helps in memory and is soothing and calming to nerves. It will help in achieving greater concentration during meditative practice as well. Other herbs are Shankhapushpi and other Medhya herbs.

KNOW ABOUT THIS CONDITION

Obesity : Overview Of Causes

Obesity refers to increase fat in our body. This fat is deposited in adipose tissue and subcutaneously or below the skin.

Obesity results when we consume more calories than what we need for energy requirement and tissue repair. Dietary awareness or dietary restriction is a must for this condition.

Taking large amount of fried food, junk food, fast foods, too much fat and oil, more of starch and sugars are some of the dietary factors that need urgent attention if someone likes to shed extra weight.

Sedentary habits and lack of physical exercise are also the chief factors for increase in the incidence of obesity. Particularly children and house wives spend too much before TV - cartoons, serials, movies, computer games etc. All these lead to burden our body by helping to gain weight.

Mental tension, anxiety and depression can lead to the habit of overeating. The person tries to compensate his or her emotional situation by eating too much. Even the drugs for depression increase weight as their side effect.

Of course, there are several diseases in which obesity results secondary to that particular disease e.g. obesity in hypothyroidism. These diseases and secondary obesity are not the scope of present discussion.

Scientists enumerate obesity in genetic disorders. Definitely there can be some genetic predisposition for obesity. But to blame genes fully for such diseases like obesity is to insult the medical science or even science.

In most cases, by understanding the causes of obesity or factors that predispose us to obesity, we can control obesity to a great extent.
