Herbal Remedies Newsletter , July 2006

Greetings and Welcome

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Holistic herbal health newsletter of July month. It is about two months now since the last newsletter due to June month's summer holiday. We didn't work on Holistic Herbalist in June.

You can ask for your or someone other's interview. We will be happy to hear from you.

The weather is mixed with some rainy days and some cloudy and some with scorching heat. We promised you about the e-book. And it is ready to be downloaded by the subscriber of Holistic Herbal Health Newsletter.

We have our internet connection that is based on GPRS of Cell phone and it is very poor when related to Broadband. In the meantime while working for your e-book, two new resources are found. First Mozilla Firefox is the better replacement of Internet Explorer and another free software is openoffic.org that can work in place of MS office. It took me 3 days to download 93 MB of openoffice.org software so that i could send you the promised book in pdf format. Otherwise the book and photographs were ready in May.

I hope you will enjoy the free e-book 'Mom I Am Hungry'. You will need to have Adobe acrobat reader to open this pdf file. You can download it free if you so desire.

THEME OF THE MONTH

Interview Of Swami Parmanandaji - Focused Living For God Realization With Openly bestowing his blessed wisdom:

Swami Shri Paramanandaji

I met Swamiji last year when one of my friend asked me to visit a saint in a nearby village. Swamiji stayed on a small hill surrounded by farms on the bank of a small river. That small piece of land had a simple cottage for Swamiji.

There were few other persons there and we enjoyed talking with Swamiji on all the topics - ayurveda, herbal medicine, yoga, reiki, spirituality. This year when Swamiji returned to same village for his two month stay. He invited me to come through a contact person.

I went there with one book on Gita by Swami Shri Pranabananda ji who is the disciple of Shri Shri Lahiri Mahasaya (You can know more about them by reading the spiritual classic "Autobiography Of A Yogi" by Shri Paramhansa Yogananada - founder of YSS in India and Self Realization Fellowship In USA). The other books were - Seven Spiritual Laws by Deepak Chopra and books on Ayurveda.

Though Swamiji is not versed in English language, he cleared several points for me when I discussed with him about them. I am sharing some of the topics with you that we discussed.

HH: Swamiji, you have such great and practical wisdom of yoga and we see you wandering and living the life of a recluse. Why don't you start some organization and distribute what you have?

Swamiji: Though I write personally about the results and experiences of my sadhana, I have to go a long way still. God realization is my ultimate aim and I want to totally focus my life for that goal. In the journey, i do counsel the persons who approach me for spiritual guidance. And there are some serious practitioners of yoga whom I am guiding in yoga practice.

HH: Swamiji what is the principal sadhana that you are following? What had been your experience in this realm?

Swamiji: Basically I am following Hatha Yoga. It has complete set of information of a seeker. Most of the persons who are following Hatha Yoga are struck in yoga postures and some breathing exercises that are known as Pranayama.

Yoga postures and Pranayamas are good for the helath of body and mind. But one should aim high enough for what yoga practice is developed by ancient sages.

There is Mudras, Meditation and Samadhi practices that are there and these need some sincere efforts.

Besides these practices, I do take many other spiritual practices in the course of my life and there is remarkable experience with them. For example, there is 'Mantra' repetition practice. Mantra are the potent seeds of sound vibrations that are used in prayer and meditation and they can really change the way we live.

The practice of Mantra repetition takes a long time to master a single Mantra. Some scripture has mentioned that one should repeat a Mantra  thousand thousand (X100,000) times the number characters or alphabets in that mantra. So this practice takes quite some time.

I realized that when I repeated any Mantra only 108 times in the deep state of meditation and that Mantra is working for me. I have experienced it and done it several times.

In this deep state of meditation, we have focused our life energy in the higher centers of brain and we have sharply focused and subtle attention. Together both of these qualities work for you to get earlier result.

HH: Swamiji I did Mantra repetition practice some time and I didn't get such marvelous effects and experiences. I know that if I began some positive affirmation to effect some positive change in my life, it is going to have contrarily negative effects initially. What is the wrong that is happening in this instance? Affirmation is a recognized system all over the world to influence our subconscious mind and to give positive feedback to our mind and it is very much similar to Manta practice if we judiciously chose what we are going to affirm again and again.

Many scientists and doctors has attained great results of affirmation and visualization in many chronic diseases like asthma, tumor, addictions, blood cancer and learning new habits.

Swamiji: The repetition of Mantra or affirmation or prayer can many times be mechanical. It means that we are repeating it passively and our mind is wandering somewhere else.

The more fundamental aspect is "Bhava" or Consciousness. This is the underlying power of Consciousness behind a thought. Many times we offer prayer to God for money whereas our bhava or consciousness dwells on the opposite - poverty, lack, greed or some other type of negative consciousness.

When we do affirmations rightly - the right statement, with feeling, its intensity going from vocal sound to mental repetition, we will be able to affect and change our bhava or consciousness and we begin to nurture the bhava of what we are offering our prayers for.

This change in bhava is the seed of manifestation. This is what is called attracting through Consciousness. It is the way of adept yogis to attract what they require.

When we are desiring or praying with good intention for our progress or success or peace or health and desiring harm for nobody and we are supporting our prayers with validating activities in life, we start to nurture that consciousness easily and earlier.

The other solution is to attract this consciousness by deep meditation. But the first steps are Yama & Niyama in yoga or the don'ts and do's that we should pay attention to. We can't force God's divine energy to manifest some wrong things in our lives. Our prayers and aspirations should comply with spiritual principles.

We can fill scores of pages with our experiences and talk with Swamiji and space and time is limiting us now. Thanks and Pranam to Swamiji from all of us.

PROMOTING THE UNDERSTANDING HOLISTIC HEALTH - True Learning Empowers Us To Be Liberated:

There is a Sanskrit verse that deals with this thought in a beautiful manner.

"Vidya ya sa vimuktaye"

The literal meaning is that knowledge or learning is one that liberates us or empowers us to have freedom. Truly a great thought! Isn't it?

This statement has several implications. The best one is spiritual - the knowledge of self or soul or Father and Child (Representing the individual soul and cosmic soul or God in The Holy Trinity) can truly liberate us or frees us from the human and natural limitations. We are empowered by the power of self or soul.

Secondly let us consider this statement for psychological field. Actually all the learning is liberating and freeing us. It is going to break our limitations and expand our lives.

In the nursery or primary school, the first thing that a child learns is ABC.. i.e. alphabets. The 26 letters takes the longest duration of time in learning cycle of every person. It can take a few months to one or two years. We devote the greatest amount of time and energy to what appears to be the least of learning.

But if we don't apply that effort in the begining, we won't be able to read any book of whatever subject when we are grown up. A science student reads a thousand page book in one year and really several of these books in a year. We owe this all the our learning foundation in the earlier years. Now you find and assert that learning is truly empowering us in so many ways.

Now consider social realm. We learn how to relate to strangers and neighbors and relatives and family. This relation building takes a great effort from us and many times many headaches and heartbreaks!

If we learn how to communicate ourselves with persons who are in our contact, we can feel the power of liberation in social learning.

Now let us apply this principle in the physical realm of body and health. It is superb to know and feel!

Ayurvedic medicine endorses daily exercise and moderation in eating and asks us to observe several rules of hygiene, yoga, mediation, and good habits or character.

Modern medicine discovered and found that high fat diet is not good for heart and blood vessels health especially in middle age group and daily exercises can prevent diabetes and hypertension and other civilization borne diseases.

On the one hand, we don't apply this knowledge even after knowing it and we fall prey to these disorders in the middle life to the great turmoil in our whole life - personal, family, work, and all circles. Go to somebody who has suffered heart attack (MI or Myocardial Infarction) in his thirties or forties and feel how limited he feels and actually lives in great limitation. How it had affected his family and work and earning and savings.

Uuufa!

Now feel how empowered and liberated and healthier that person would have been if he followed the general knowledge of good health.

OK, perhaps it is enough hint for us.

True Knowledge is liberating or empowering us.

Next month we will be sharing what could be the opposite of this statement and you will find that great many foes of us, the human beings are simply revealed in this profound statement of Vedic literature.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Paul From USA:

What herbs would you recommend for increased saliva production. My parotid gland is not working well. Thanks. Paul

You can take black pepper mixed with sugar powder. Take 1gm of powder of black pepper and 100gm of sugar and grind them in mixer. Take 1 gm at a time. It can be taken twice or thrice a day.

Alternatively you can take the powder of dry ginger, long pepper and black pepper with honey. Use 1/2 gm of powder of these three herbs or spices with i teaspoonful of honey. You can take it three or four times a day.

BE RESOURCEFUL WITH

Charaka Samhita & Organization Of Sections:

Charaka Samhita is written by the great ancient Ayurvedist Charaka. This is one of the most authoritative work on Ayurveda. Really speaking this is the eldest and oldest brother in ayurveda literature.

Great many articles can be shared to convey the message about the features of this classic text. We are emphasizing primarily on the organization of eight sections of this book that contain the 12o chapters of the text.

In earlier days, there was a Gurukula system of education. It is somewhat close to residential schools. Students or disciples were in close association with teacher or Guru or mentor. One person used to be adept in many streams of learning with specializing in one. And this personality is revealed in the ayurvedic literature as well.

Charaka Samhita contains 120 chapters that are organized in eight sections.

1) Sutra Section: This is the introductory portion containing 30 chapters. It sets the ground for ayurvedic learning.

2) Nidana Section: This section deals with pathogenesis and pathology of various disorders. There are eight chapters in this section.

3) Vimana Section: This section with eight chapters describes clinical examination, examination of patient, analyzing herbs and diet, channels and general disease management protocols.

4) Sharira Section: This section relates to body, anatomy, physiology, embryology. There are eight chapters.

5) Indriya Section: This section explains the complications of disease in twelve chapters.

6) Disease Management Section: With its thirty chapters this section provides the ayurvedic management of various disorders - rejuvenation, aphrodisiac, fever and infections, bleeding disorders, tumor, diabetes and urinary disorders, leprosy and skin disorders, tuberculosis, psychiatric disorders, epilepsy, emaciating disorders, disorders with edema, abdominal diseases, piles, intestinal disorders, anemia, respiratory disorders, toxicology, addictions, surgery, degenerative disorders, arthritis, gynecological disorders, gout and several other disorders.

7) Kalpa Section: This section describes various herbal formulations for Pancahkarma therapy in twelve chapters.

HERBAL HOME REMEDY

Incense Sticks

Incense sticks serve two purposes - one they are used daily in prayers by almost all of Hindus and it might be that they are used in other religious practices as well. They give a sense of sacredness and lightness in the environment.

The second use is typically endorsed by Ayurvedic Medicine and it should and could be verified on other parameters. There is a property and group of herbs in ayurveda - 'Rakshoghna' herbs. 'Rakshoghna' means all of these - disinfectant, purifying, fragrant, freeing from microbes, neutralizing bad energy.

This group of herbs should be used to make sticks. These sticks can be modified by altering the composition to exert certain specific effects from the above list of their uses.

We can validate these effects again by Kirlien photography and checking the aura or pranic field of the atmosphere of the home or premises, by noticing the effects on mood, by noticing the effects based on aromatherapy, by examining the level of susceptibility to pathogens and bacteria and common insects like flies, mosquitoes.

THE GREAT NEWS

Last month, I shared the begining of professional holistic consultation on holistic herbalist. The process is going on and we are on the way to offer it.

I like to plan adequately before starting the services about what, how and why I would be offering to you in my services. The main delay is because of herbal formulations.

Ideally the herbal formulations with ayurvedic herbs are easiest and most effective and cheaper. But present regulations implemented severe lab and microbial reports to be presented even before the clinicians who are offering their services to only one patient. Actually this might be right and financially feasible for large exporters and big pharmacy companies.

The doctors deal directly with their patients and nobody from abroad will want to get services just after casually visiting the site. They will use their discrimination for well informative and growing sites with good services and support.

We are associating with good overseas herbal stores and suppliers who could serve the need of our visitors and patients. Further we want to recommend and free our patients to get the formulation or herbs from where they find it suitable.
