About The Plant:
Stem & Root:
Passionflower is a tendril vine. The strong woody stem can
reach up to 10 m. in length. The stem is initially angular and later it is
rounded, with longitudinally striated bark.
Leaves:
The alternate, petiolated and serrate leaves are finely pubescent.
The undersurface has more hair than the upper surface. Stipules and tendrils
grow from the leaf axis.
Flowers:
The axillary pedicle measures
up to 8 cm. and has one flower. The androgynous flowers are rayed with a
diameter of 6 - 9 cm. Flower has an involucre. The outside of the five sepals is
green and the inside is white and tough.
Five petals are whitish to pale
red. The secondary corolla inside the petals has four thread wreaths arranged in
rays around the axis of the flower. The ovary has three carpels and three style
branches. The above six structures end in a thick stigma.
Five stamens joined at
the base are fused to the androgynophor. Passionflower has many large aromatic
flowers. Flowers bloom from June to August.
Edible Parts:
The berry or fruit is egg
shaped with multiple seeds. Edible, fresh and juicy fruits are gathered when
soft and yellow-green. The small berry like fruit is called Granadilla or
water lemon.
The yellow pulp from the
fruit is edible. First make sure that the fruit is not over ripe as it would
then ferment into a foul smelling paste.
Habitat:
Passionflower is found in Eastern North America - Southeast US to
Argentina to Brazil. This vine is found in sandy thickets, open fields,
roadside, fence rows and waste places. Now it is grown throughout Europe.
Cultivation:
It is cultivated by root
division and by seeds, transplants from the wild plants. It needs
sandy, slightly acidic, well drained soil in Sunlight. A trellis is also needed
for this climbing tendril vine.
For a maximum flavonoids
content in the flowering shoot, the two yearly harvest is considered good
by many persons and when the fruits are matured. The harvest is either air
dried or hay dried.
