Natural Herbal Remedies, Dietary And Nutritional Supplements Arrest And Reverse Heart Disease

Dietary And Nutritional Supplements Arrest And Reverse Heart Disease

The facts that diet and nutritional supplements such as many natural herbal remedies can effectively arrest the progression of heart disorders and eventually reverse them. This fact has been validated innumerable times in the practices of all qualified herbalists and in the lives of many many persons.

Dr Dean Ornish had been one such pioneer to validate this fact based on scientific medical study. Now Dr Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., MD shares his story, "In my 21-year Cleveland Clinic nutritional study, I (Read, natural herbal remedies or I found that natural herbal remedies) arrested and reversed advanced coronary artery disease in patients who had already undergone bypasses and angioplasties; some had even been told by their cardiologist that they had less than a year to live."

This study builds from epidemiological evidence in plant-based cultures, such as rural China, the Papua Highlanders, central Africa, and the Tarahumara Indians, where the inhabitants are virtually free of coronary disease.

My recent book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, updates the study beyond 21 years, making it the longest of its type. Those patients told by expert cardiologists 20 years ago that they had less than a year to live who are alive and well in 2007 are a particularly compelling story.

Dear Friends, this is all normal and natural, nothing miraculous healing or cure. Silently natural herbal remedies like Terminalia arjuna, Guggul and several other herbal remedies are producing the magic in the lives of persons who are using them.

Advertising Of Unhealthy Food And Child Obesity

Advertising Of Unhealthy Food And Child Obesity:

Children Food and Beverage Initiative announced that 11 US corporations have agreed not to advertise unhealthy food to children. Hershey and Coco Cola pledged that they won't use children below 12 years in their advertisement.

We share the results of one poll that had been done for the impact of this kind of initiative of not using children in advertisement of unhealthy food. The result of poll is - 7% people agreed that it will reduce the child obesity greatly; 56% maintained that it will stop child obesity moderately, 35% voted that it will have no effect on child obesity, 5% voted that it will eventually increase child obesity.

It is good on the part of corporations to take such an initiative. But it is the greater responsibility of parents and all of us to show children the non-beneficial effect of unhealthy food - by teaching and by EXAMPLE. Only then the impact will be lasting. If we empty the bottle of soft beverage before children and tell him that it is unhealthy, no child will buy into this fact. We, as parents and responsible members of society need to take such healthy enhancing initiatives ourselves.

In a letter to the FDA, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) called for a ban on the sale of 75 beverages, cereals, and snack foods containing herbs. CSPI believes that consumers are being mislead by health claims on the products' labels. The group alleges that functional foods like Snapple and Arizona Teas are unsafe and "spiked" with "illegal" ingredients. FDA promised to "carefully evaluate" CSPI's concerns. ABC News, July 18; Natural Business Journal, August 2000.

Enfamol Nutraceuticals Inc., maker of Efalex and Efalex Focus, and J&R Research, maker of Pycnogenol, settled a suit with the Federal Trade Commission, agreeing they would no longer advertise these supplements as a treatment for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The companies were not required to pay fines. FTC officials stated they are particularly concerned about dietary supplements with unproven claims being marketed for children.
Three Different Dosage Of St. John's Wort Tested For Depression

More than 25 double blind clinincal research trials have affirmed again and again the efficacy of St. John's Wort or Hypericum perforatum for the treatment of mild to moderate depression. In one Swiss study, researchers tried to determine the optimum dosage of hypericin. So they tried different concentrations in 348 patients in the multicenter research project. This study used the standard dosage of 0.33 mg hypericin per day and two other dosage variants - higher and lower dosage.

Volunteers for the study were recruited from 38 centers in Germany and Switzerland. Participants were divided into three groups based on dosage they are taking - 0.33 mg per day, 0.17 mg per day and 1.0 mg per day. Researchers measured improvement using the Hamilton Psychiatric Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17), self-assessments from patients (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and physician assessments (Clinical Global Impression Scale).

Physicians rated the efficacy of SJW "moderate to good" in roughly 70 percent of cases for all of the groups. Self-assessments by patients supported these results. Seventy-four patients reported a total of 82 mild side effects during the course of the study; however, only seven were causally linked to SJW. The most common complaints were nausea, headache, and dizziness, and there was no difference in the overall incidence between groups. There were 88 dropouts from the study due to lack of compliance, medical reasons, or other causes.

The overall response rate in this study was 62 to 68 percent, which is higher than the average 55 percent response rate the authors found in the 13 placebo-controlled studies they analyzed for their study. The lack of a dose-response effect in this trial with SJW standardized for hypericin content may provide support for the theory that hypericin is not the main active constituent for the relief of mild-to-moderate depression. - Krista Morien, HRF

What Are You Going To Have - Whole Grain Wheat Flour Or Enriched Wheat Flour

Modern day marketers are making a lot of noise with so many of the natural things that we have been using for centuries or for millenia. Wheat flour is one of the such food that is used in every home.

They have something like Enriched Wheat Flour. See the logic. First wheat grains are processed in way that the outer covering of the grains is stripped off. This outer covering of seeds has good variety of roughage, great vitamins and minerals. They call this flour White Flour. Studies have shown that this outer covering has great nutritional and medicinal value as it is found to have more than 11 vitamins and minerals.

Now Flour manufactureres are at first taking away the natural and precious 11 vitamins and minerals plus roughage from your flour and then adding some 2 or 3 chemicals and call it Enriched Wheat Flour.

Are you going to buy into this theory? Certainly you should not. Use Whole Grain Whole Wheat Flour and not White Flour or Enriched Wheat Flour or Processed Wheat Flour.

Simple Nuggets Of Wisdom About Good Eating

Eating well goes beyond the healthy high-fat, low-carb diet. It means making every meal special - and that doesn't take as much effort as you might imagine. You don't have to spend a lot of money either. Eating well doesn't mean that you forget about taste and make your tongue an ascetic.

Follow some of the simple rules and you can fufill many of the good eating principles....

1. Correct Selection Of Food: Select good-quality foods that are good for you - and avoid foods that are bad for you. Foods that are bad for you are those that, although they may taste good, make you sick or give you stomach problems or make you tired. Why make yourself miserable for a cheap, temporary thrill?

2. Plan Your Meals: Don't burden yourself into recipes and dietetics books. Planning meals can be done everymorning in a few minutes.

3. Practice Moderation: This is one of the fundamental principle of eating in Ayurveda. Don't stuff your stomach and later suffer with belching and bloating.

4. Eat Slowly: You will be able to enjoy your meals and what you eat will be more nourishing and health providing.

5. Stay Focused: Don't distract yourself while eating. Watching TV, reading magazines, engaged in intense talking all obstruct your attention and energy and possibly some digesive juices from eating.

6. Enjoy What You Eat: This is one of basic thing that we habitually forget to observe in most of the worthy and deserving things. John Gray, the famous author of "Men Are From Mars.." has written a book on this subject.

Which Is Better? Mammography Or MRI Scan For Scanning Breast Cancer

When we try to get investigated and there are more than one choices, we always ponder about which one is better for me. Which of the two diagnostic modality will serve as the best.

There is no definite and clear cut answer to it. Each of the test offers it benefit and some limitation. Doctors have to judge based on this. One of such debating issue is that which of the two diagnostic tests - MRI or Mammography is better than the other in scanning Breast Cancer.

Here are some guiding inputs from experts....

"Most of us who do breast MRI know very well that MRI is highly sensitive for all cancer, invasive and DCIS. If you look at the high-risk screening studies (eg, Kriege et al, the MARIBS study, or Werner et al), you will find that MRI will be about 75% sensitive for all cancers and mammography, about 40% sensitive for all cancers."

A direct comparison of the 2 imaging modalities suggested that MRI was nearly twice as effective as mammography.

"These findings can only lead to the conclusion that MRI outperforms mammography in tumor detection and diagnosis, the observation that MRI detects many DCIS lesions that go unnoticed on mammography implies that some invasive carcinomas can be prevented by timely intervention on the basis of MRI findings," write Carla Boetes, MD, and Ritse M. Mann, PhD, from the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in the Netherlands. "As such, MRI has the potential to increase survival when used to detect breast cancer."

"Although MRI is twice as sensitive as mammography for all cancers, and more sensitive then mammography for DCIS, it is not perfect," Dr. Schnall continued. "There are still 20% or so cancers that are not detected by MRI, and most of these are DCIS that present with microcalcification. So although MRI alone will outperform mammography alone in detecting invasive cancer and DCIS, as Christiane and Carla both state (and in full disclosure, I consider both of them friends), the addition of mammography to MRI will increase the cancer yield over MRI alone, particularly in the setting of DCIS, by detecting MRI occult lesions that present with calcification. Unless we are prepared to argue that the 10% to 20% additional yield contributed by mammography is not important, it is hard to eliminate mammography from the cancer screening regimen."

The conclusion is that MRI is better when you are choosing one of these two methods. But using both of them are the best.

The Patient Centric Human Oriented Approach Is Necessary In Medicine And Health Care

One study of recent psychiatry journals revealed that actual human beings with mental disorders have practically disappeared from their pages. They are full of multicolor MRI scans and complex genetic maps. Fantastic progress is being made in understanding the biology of mental disorders

On the other hand when we review the major medical journals, we find...Now look at the major medical journals. Along with cutting-edge science, they now include a substantial amount of the medical humanities -- first-person accounts of illness by patients and doctors. Essays, stories, even poems!

This discrepancy has resulted from the fact that after long delay, psychiatry has eagerly embraced the scientific model and largely thrown out the "soft" disciplines, including the humanities.

Concurrently, medicine has realized the limits of narrowly defined "scientific medicine." Twenty years ago, it became painfully clear that many doctors no longer listened to patients. The result has been an unprecedented flowering of the medical humanities.

So we need to go to basics again.. Science and Medicine and Psychiatry all of these deal with human beings and without the human centric and patient oriented approach, there is no use of such knowledge. Such pure scientific knowledge is responsible for atom bomb blasts in Japan and the attacks of 9/11. We need to have mind and heart at the same time...both working in harmony for the upliftment of humanity, for relieving our agonies and disorders.

In his Nobel Prize speech, psychiatrist Eric Kandel called for renewed collaboration between science and the humanities, which, he says, "will not only improve our understanding of psychiatric and neurological disorders, but will also lead to a deeper understanding of ourselves."
