Sage herb should be
used with some caution in some conditons like pregnancy, breast feeding, post
partum period, by epilepsy patients. There are many concerns over the Thujone

Sage During Pregnancy:
This herb should be avoided during pregnancy.
It has emmenagogue property that is why it it can cause uterine contractions.
Sage During Post-Partum Period:
Post-partum period is the right time to use
this herb. It will help in the earlier discharge of lochia and help in
involution of uterus i.e. restoration of the normal shape of uterus after
parturition. The involution period usually takes at least six weeks.
Sage For Breast Feeding Mother:
The cold tea or cold infusion should be
avoided during the period a mother is breast feeding the child. Hot tea is good
during this period. At the time when a mother desires weaning the child off the
breast feeding, she can take cold tea or infusion. It will help in drying up the
milk in the breast.
Sage & Epilepsy Patients:
Sage and its oil possess the epeleptiform
convulsant property. It should not be used by the patients of epilepsy or
seizures.
Sage & Thujone:
Due to the presence of alpha and beta thujones, there are some
concerns regarding its internal use. When it is consumed in large dosage
regularly over a period of several weeks, thujone may cause in some individuals
confusion and slightly increased heart rate (Not to the proportion of
Tachycardia).
Sufficiently large intake of this herb might cause
convulsions. The thujone is present in greater amount in alcoholic extract of
the herb in comparison to the aqueous extract.
Sage oil should first be diluted in a cup or glass of water
before internal use.
External application of this herb is fully safe even on daily use.
Don't swallow the gargles as there might be some microbial infections in the
oral cavity or throat. The tender branch that is used for herbal toothbrush cum
toothpaste should be crushed with teeth and then rubbed over the teeth and gums.
The saliva shouldn't be swallowed.
