State Of Consciousness
The Definition Of Disease Based On Consciousness In Ayurvedic Medicine
Every disease is related to a state
of consciousness. Disease is defined in several ways in ayurvedic medicine. The
very first definition is about relationship of disease and its
influence over consciousness. This is a very fundamental aspect of
every disease that all of us have experienced in life.
State Of Consciousness Common In All Disorders:
Disease is defined as the lacuna or hole or gap in the free flow
of consciousness. Disease is some block or obstruction in the
principle of consciousness or our awareness. This characteristic
state of consciousness is
found in all disorders. This definition might appear strange to a
modern mind but it is practical and can easily be validated by every
person in his day to day life.
Think of a day when you got up in the morning and rushed through
your daily routine - toilet, bathroom, dressing up, breakfast,
rushing to office and thinking several other things. This is the
general scenario and we see that our state of consciousness is freely
flowing. It is not bound or obstructed or blocked, whatever you may
call it.
Think of another day in your life when you have headache. Where
does headache appear for the first time? Mind, yes headache and all
the disorders first appear in mind or conscious principle or simply
our awareness.
It is this quality of blockage of the free flow of awareness
that is found in every disease - minor ailments to major disease.
Our awareness is trapped, it is bound, it is not free to flow, it is
felt obstructed or blocked.
Ayurvedic medicine refers to this state of consciousness as
common in all diseases. Check it, feel it and try to remember or
feel it when you have some this or that unhealthy condition. This
realization opens up a new understanding in the role and
participation of state of Consciousness in the development of diseases.
Consciousness To Mind, Mind To Aura, Aura To Physical Body:
All the diseases are reflected in our holistic nature or our
being - our awareness or conscious principle, our thoughts, feelings
and emotions, our vital energy or aura or pranic field, and finally
our physical body.
As we have our integral personality that manifest through our
body, mind and awareness. Likewise every disorder has its
manifestation on all level of our being.
Abnormality or disease in one plane is followed by abnormalities
or disease in another parts. We hear a lot about Psychosomatic
disorders. It means that the chronic stressful situations of mind or
feeling is reflected in the form of various chronic diseases in our
body.
We have physical component in every psychiatric disorder -
anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, OCD, MDI and others. Similarly we
do have psychological component of all physical diseases like
infections, chronic pains.
These principles are the root of Body Mind Medicine. The third
component that is found missing is the most important one and it is
our soul or consciousness that brings the awareness in us.
State Of Consciousness As The Most Basic Aspect Of Our Being:
What is the most basic and integral aspect of our being? This is
somewhat a philosophical question. We can definitely point toward
the body because it is the part of our self that we give most of our
time and energy and consideration.
Biology, Medicine, Psychology as well as our own experience say
it to be something other than body. According to medicine, all the
chemicals are washed out or are replaced in our body within a period
of two years. That is our body is renewed every few years.
Next is mind. What do you think about mind? The sweet and bad
memories, the deep feelings about our past, the suppressed emotions
outlive all the chemicals in body. The sixty year old person
remembers the sweet and bitter memories of his childhood.
After sleep, after coma, near death experiences, the
schizophrenic patients' experiences, during prayer and meditation, we can feel the
principle of awareness underlying all the happenings or processes of
mind, however good or bad they might appear. The principle of
awareness or state of consciousness is the ultimate reference of all our dealings, our
feelings and our character and personality.
Similarly according to Yoga and Ayurveda, the most basic stratum
of our existence, the true self, our true nature is the principle of
awareness or consciousness. If we start to identify ourselves with
this principle, gradually we start to be more and more centered in
our real self.
This third and superlative dimension of body mind medicine had
been fully explored in Yoga and gradually as we are advancing in our
understanding, we will begin collectively get in touch with this
fundamental aspect of our being. Many other streams of alternative
medicine and energy healing have began to shed more light on these
aspects like reiki, acupressure, acupuncture, yoga and meditation.
And as a whole, we can expect the evolution of our state of
consciousness.
