Welcome to Datura metel - This acutely poisonous ayurvedic herb is equally effective as its modern counterpart Atropine. It is banned in most countries to be used in Food and Health supplements. Still some Ayurvedic herbal remedies use this herb in minute quantities of 20 to 50 mg or less of powder after several rounds of purification process as mentioned in Ayurveda.

This herb is known as Dhattura or Dhatura or Dhattur in Ayurveda. Its latin name is Datura metel Linn.

Habitat:

It is a commonly found herb in India.

Other Species:

This herb is the 'Royal Dhattura' as described in the ancient Materia medica of 'Rajnighantu'. There is another plant named Black Dhattura in Ayurveda. Black Dhattura is D. stramonim Linn. Its seeds are black in color. It fruit has sharp spikes and it bursts in four parts. It is found in Himalayan region up to 8000 feet altitude from sea level.

Another plant, Datura innoxia Mill. is the native of Mexico and it is also commonly found in India.

The Plant Of Thorn Apple:

It is a small bush, 3 to 5 feet in height.

Leaves:

The triangular leaves are 3 to 6 inch long.

Flowers:

Flower is violet from outside and white from inside. It is 5 to 7 inch long and is usually in group of two or three. Flowering occurs in rainy season and fruition occurs thereafter.

Fruits:

The fruit is spherical, with spikes and 1.25 inch in diameter. The spikes are not sharp.

Seeds:

After ripening of the fruit, it bursts and the solid mass of yellow or light brown and flat seeds come out.
